Making my own website - advice please
« on: Monday 05 May 08 12:04 BST (UK) »

Hi,

I wasn't sure whether to put this in here or in a the 'webspace' board, so if wrong, please moce. Smiley

Basically, i'm just after some advice as i'm planning to start my own family history website. I used dreamweaver a bit at uni (6/7 years ago now) but enjoyed it so think I could pick it up relatively easily again. Would this be the best way forward to achieve the following;

I want this sort of style; http://www.home.versatel.nl/m.d.nauta/voorouders.xhtml and then on the right, similar to the example,  the addition of all my notes I have made about each individual and b/m/d's etc.

I suppose this could be done with frames? but would then I have the laborious task of inputting ALL my information from the family tree??? Is there an alterntive that I can use that uses a GEDCOM file? I've heard of www.gedhtree.com but to me it seems a bit unfunctional/rigid...?

Any tips much appreciated. Smiley

Many, many thanks.

Immediately you have run into a problem with designing your own website.

The link you provided cannot be opened using Internet Explorer.  It needs to be opened using Firefox.  We've had this problem with this particular website before in the past.

No matter what off-the-shelf software you use there are always limitations about what you can do to present your family history.  Its basically 'pick-a-style' and stick with it.

The easiest method is to upload a GEDCOM file to somewhere like Tribal Pages and they will format the data for you and display your pages using their page layout.

You can also upload a GEDCOM file to genesreunited.com.  You do not have to be a member.

For a more hands-on approach have ar ead through the Rootschat Free Webspace section.  Quite a few like NOF.  Currently (and seemingly for a very long time) the free webspace server has been out of actionn so you will have to think about where you are going create your website.  If your ISP provides you with free webspace then you could put it there.

Sorry for being unclear, that link was just an example of what i'd hope to achieve.  Smiley

I don't mind paying for a website that I can them name the domain somethign apt, which will of course, give me a bit more flexibilty. Smiley But then I suppose it will be harder to make as all the data will need to be inputted again - I doubt a websie I create will be able to imoirt and format a GEDCOM file  Huh

I have just looked at tribal pages though and uploaded a quick gedcom file - extremely easy and straightforward - although limited functionality. As you say, i suppose it's horses for courses.

Many thanks for your advice, will have a read.

I use Tribal Pages.  It has some  excellent features - can be locked, support is good to very good, and they add features and functions from time to time - one recent was to plot your family on a map - world-wide, aother was to colour code descendents of key persons.

I have just signed to to the preimum package for tribal pages - I was impressed with its functionality actually and will do me just fine until I have the time and patience to maybe move onto something a bit more advanced.

Thanks again, downside

Web design has moved on in the last few years, driven often by users demands for more "interactivity" which would fit in with your own desires for the "look & Feel" of the your site.

Athough your experience with dreamweaver will stand you in good stead personally I would advise against frames as they are not too acceptable these days .... a similar style can be achieved using CSS.

re the other points you might want to have a look at some of the php/gedcom utilities On e very good utility is PHP GedView which can be seen at

I have my family tree on Tribal pages.  I tried various methods for my tree including gedhtree which I found too restricting.

Tribal pages has everything I want including the ability to password protect it and add some photos.  Eventually if my free roots webspace ever reappears I will link the Tribal pages to that which is my narration part of my website.

My website was with RC until the recent problems so it has temporarily moved. I used NetObjects Fusion to build the site (a very easy wysiwyg programme) and linked GedHTree into it.

I quite like the way it is laid out and was only about £10 to upgrade to the full version so I could have four lines showing.

Completely agree, I would try to avoid frames unless absolutely necessary.
