Hi, Everyone, I've rather buried this query at the end of another thread I started on The Common Room earlier today about a Matilda MORLEY. In the 1901 Census I find her living at Biggin House, Hitchin as a widowed individual of 68 years old. Her occupation is given as "caretaker". There seem to be several individuals living here, so was it some kind of institution? Perhaps someone with local knowledge of Hitchin might know the answer. Very best wishes, keith Sorry, I've just realised that Hitchin is in Hertfordshire. Could some kind moderator move it there, silly me...
Done!

Biggin House appears to have been an ancient house, the former priory of some Gilbertian Nuns. In the middle of the 19th century it housed 18 poor old women and was financed by the John Kemp charity.

Thanks very much for that, Rick, The place goes back a very long way, doesn't it? Looks like it was some kind of almshouses by the time Matilda was there in 1901, keith

Hi
The Hitchin Historical Society has produced a leaflet about The Biggin. If on the link below you go to Publications and then Books there is a reference to the leaflet as below. There is also a link to the Hichen Museum that may also be able to help you.
The Biggin (contact Publications Officer for details) Anthony M. Foster, 1980; reprinted 1997

Hi again Cathy, and Andy, Thanks very much for your continuing help on this topic. I'll certainly try and get hold of that leaflet and also contact the Hitchin Museum. There might possibly be records of some of the residents of the Almshouses... keith

The Biggin is right next to the (new) market place in Hitchin and backs onto the River Hiz. There's a photo of it here:

Hi Keith, My Great Great Great Grandmother was a widow and resident at Biggin House, Hitchin, Hertfordshire during the 1881 and 1891 censuses. I notice that you display a crest with the name Winter beneath it. Please can you tell me its significance to you as my ancester was a Winters. Maureen

MAWs, All very interesting! And as for my WINTER family, they were in Norwich in the 19thC, and before that a couple of small villages in Norfolk to the north. PM me if you think we might be possibly related... keith And welcome to Rootschat of course! PM is Personal Message, by the way - if you click on my user name you should find the link there

MAWS You will have to make a couple more posts before you can use the PM facility. Where were your Winters?
Can I suggeest that you enter and check your surname interests in the surname interests table. The link is via "Your surname Interests" found at the foot of every page.

Thanks to Keith and to David, In answer, My Winters lived in the Hitchin, Arlesey and other parishes close to the Beds/Herts border in the 18th 19th centuries. Thanks to another previous post on this thread, I will probably follow up my research on where and how they lived with the Hitchin Historical Society. Kind regards Maureen
