Hi, Everyone,
I've rather buried this query at the end of another thread I started on The Common Room earlier today about a Matilda MORLEY.
In the 1901 Census I find her living at Biggin House, Hitchin as a widowed individual of 68 years old. Her occupation is given as "caretaker".
There seem to be several individuals living here, so was it some kind of institution? Perhaps someone with local knowledge of Hitchin might know the answer.

Biggin House appears to have been an ancient house, the former priory of some Gilbertian Nuns.
In the middle of the 19th century it housed 18 poor old women and was financed by the John Kemp charity.

The place goes back a very long way, doesn't it? Looks like it was some kind of almshouses by the time Matilda was there in 1901,

The Hitchin Historical Society has produced a leaflet about The Biggin. If on the link below you go to Publications and then Books there is a reference to the leaflet as below. There is also a link to the Hichen Museum that may also be able to help you.

Thanks very much for your continuing help on this topic. I'll certainly try and get hold of that leaflet and also contact the Hitchin Museum. There might possibly be records of some of the residents of the Almshouses...

The Biggin is right next to the (new) market place in Hitchin and backs onto the River Hiz. There's a photo of it here:
