1851 HO107/2076 George Smith, 33, police officer, b Whitbourne, Herefordshire (indexed as Whibona) Isabella S, 30, wife, b East Indies Mary S, 10, dau, b Pershore, Worcs George S, 9, son, b Bretforton, Worcs James S, 4, son, b Brailes, Warwicks
This is good news because the police records are often excellent. I have an ancestor who was in the police at the same time and the record dept came up with his entire career + a photograph of him taken in the 1860s.

You asked for births. You could order the certificates online.
James Smith Dec 1846 Shipston on Stour 11 410 (covers Brailes)
George Smith IGI: bap 27 Mar 1842 Bretforton, Worcs, son of George and Mary Smith Mar 1842 Evesham 18 374 (although I noticed a George Smith registered in Jun 1842 Shipston-on-Stour)
Mary Smith There are three Mary Smiths b Jun 1840 in Pershore (see freebmd.org)
Apart from approaching the Mercia police to ask about their records, this site may have something on when they lived in Bretforton: http://www.bromsgrovebmsgh.co.uk/evesham_index.htm
Unfortunately the Whitbourne baptisms are not on the IGI so you will have to contact the Herefordshire record office.
There are some old Thomas Smiths in the early censuses (including a 77 year-old one living in Whitbourne in 1851) but there is no way of telling whether they are yours.
