1813-1837 indexes do - you have to match the name(s) you know to the date after which the marriage could have taken place.  And have some clue as to where the marriage could have taken place. These indexes are Anglican.
Earlier marriages can also be found in Boyd's marriage index.

The Index of Northumberland Marriages 1813-1837 covers all (Anglican) Parishes in Northumberland in surname ( both groom and bride) order.

It provides date and parish of marriage.

Hello Pat

I realised too late that I had not said that the year I was interested in was 1931.  Some County Bmds have matched from 1837 the parties to a marriage  and (and as you will know even some of the GRO Indexes in the 1920s show the other spouses surname) and I wondered if Northumberland had done likewise.  My problem simply is this.  I have been looking for the marriage of an Alexander Spears born 1904.  I could only find entries in 1943 and 1931.  I thought that the 1943 entry seemed likely and purchased the certificate.  It wasn't mine.  The other entry is for a marriage in the Jun qtr of 1931 Batey/ Morpeth.  An RC marriage possibily.   So before sending off for a certificate I decided to see if both parties were listed locally.  It is very kind of you to offer help but I don't expect people to go and make a search.

So you are simply looking for the marriage of Alexander Spears.

What characteristics will allow you to know which Alexander Spears is "yours"

Is it his age at marriage ? Do you know who he married ?

You mention "County bmds". As far as I know there is no relevance to "county". There was no county hierachy of Register Offices. Each individual RO registered it's relevant BMDs and submitted quarterly returns to GRO HQ in London.

The inclusion of a spouse surname in the Marriage Index started in the September Qtr of 1912 and was throughout England and Wales ( I do not know about Scotland)

( Maiden names of mother's of registered births were included  on Birth Index from Sept Qtr 1911. Age at death was included from March Qtr 1866 on Death Index. Again for all England and Wales).

As you probably know BMD indexes for England and Wales that end up on sites like FreeBMD, originate from GRO HQ, and not from the individual Register Offices. And individual references are GRO references that are unfamiliar/useless when obtaining a BMD certificate from the relevant Register Office.
