Winding Road still exists but most of the housing is now gone. There were what we would now call apartments in the area together with several Irish immigrant families who worked in the nearby mills and construction of the canal and railway. Several houses seem to have been incorporated into one dwelling in at least one instance. With up to 40 people living there but no head of family. The road is fairly central to Halifax and gives easy access to the Gas Works as well as the Railway Station and city center shops. You should be able to find it on http://maps.live.com/# (My gg grandfather was living at number 19 in 1991 ) Dave

Dave,
Thanks for your info and your help. Thanks for the link also- the map of Hx showed where Winding Lane is. I wish my printer was better so I could have copied off the map.
I think my lot in 1870 would have been packed into whatever dwelling they had.
Thanks again, charlotte
