HENRY & MARY STEVENS
« on: Tuesday 06 May 08 07:18 BST (UK) »

I know my Great-Grandfather was ALFRED STEVENS born 21 April 1837 in Rye, Sussex, England.  He was a ships carpenter and jumped ship here in Australia at about the age of 17 in favor of the Victorian gold-fields.  He had 2 older siblings who remained in England - Amelia Jane Stevens (c1826) and Henry William Stevens (5 Jan 1831) who I believe died in infancy.  I am also aware that their parents were HENRY STEVENS (C1799 Rye, Sussex) and his wife MARY ANN BENNETT (c1798 Yorkshire).

It is these last 2 people HENRY & MARY that I am seeking information on - my 2nd Great Grand-parents.

The last bit of data I have is that in the 1861 English Census Henry was listed as a Master Mariner, aged 62 and was the head of the household at 19 West Street, Rye, Sussex.

Living in Australia makes research in England impossible especially as I don't understand the various areas, county's, shires or whatever.  Is there anyone that can give me some information preferably with reference details?

Thanks ~ H

H

Welcome to Rootschat.

There are a number of sources of info about Sussex, one being the Sussex Marriage Index.

From the Sussex Marriage Index
Rye, East Sussex, 17 Apr 1825
Henry STEVENS
Mary Ann BENNETT

1841 census
Jarretts Yard, High Street, Rye
Henry STEVENS, 40, Mariner, yes (born in county)
Mary STEVENS, 40, no
Amelia STEVENS, 15, yes
Alfred STEVENS, 4, yes
HO107; Piece 1109; Book: 4; Civil Parish: Rye; County: Sussex; Enumeration District: 1; Folio: 8; Page: 8

1841 census ages of those above 15 were rounded down to the nearest 5.

1851 - indexed as HEVENS
Rope Walk, Rye
Mary Ann STEVENS, wife mar 53, born Yorkshire
Amelia STEVENS, dau unm 24, born Sussex, Rye
Alfred STEVENS, son unm 13, Scholar, born ditto
HO107/1634/352/26

Henry must have been away at sea.

FreeBMD at www.freebmd.org.uk has transcribed details of BMD registrations for England and Wales from 1837. There is a death for a Mary Ann STEVENS listed there Sep qtr 1858, Rye, 2b 2. More than likely your Mary.

Alfred's sister Amelia Jane married Henry HOLLIS, Jun qtr 1853, St Lukes, which is in Middlesex. 26 JUN 1853 Saint Pauls Bunhill Row, Finsbury, London according to the IGI. In 1861 they were in Southwark, in Surrey. Can post the details if you would like them.

England is divided into counties and most records are county based. BMD registrations are held in County Record offices as well as a national location, and these started in 1837. Anything before that you have to use Parish Records. The LDS have microfilmed a lot of the PRs and these are available on microfilm through their Family History Centres. The main search tool for their info is at www.familysearch.org and is called the IGI.

There is a Henry STEVENS listed on the IGI as being baptised at Rye on 26 Dec 1800, parents Stephen and Ann, which is a likely candidate for your Henry. There are a few siblings there as well, some with Ann as mother and some Hannah. It looks like Stephen was married twice.

First marriage
From the Sussex Marriage Index
Rye, East Sussex, 8 Jul 1798:
Stephen STEVENS, bach.(B)
Ann JARRETT, sp.botp.
Extra Information: Witness wit;Wm.CROUCHERJas.WELLSLEMary APPS.

Second marriage
Rye, East Sussex, 25 Apr 1804
Stephen STEVENS, widr.(B)
Hannah COOPER, sp.botp.
Extra Information: Witness wit;Ed.FILMERSarah BUCKJn.CROUCHER.

Stephen and Hannah were still around in 1841, unfortunately in the Rye Workhouse. He was 70 and Hannah was 80. Stephen is possibly the one who died Sep qtr 1843, Rye. He was not born in county.
