I am trying to verify the parentage and birth date of Henry Mitchelson who stated in all the Scottish census that he was born in Dundee in 1833-34. His marriage certificate states that his parents are Henry Mitchelson and Mary Cairncross. I cannot find any such marriage. Others think his mother is Mary Grant.
Henry Jnr married Mary Stephen (Steven) on 14 July 1860.
Can anyone help please? kjb

Hi kjp
Welcome to Rootschat
His death certificate (1922, aged 89) states that his mother was Marion Cairncross.
There is a baptism for a Marion Cairncross, Dundee. 1st April 1810. Parents William Cairncross and Margaret McGregor.
Have you found the family on the 1841 Census:
http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
Also, who were the witnesses at his marriage?
Regards

However, there is a marriage showing for a Henry Mitchelson to a Mary Ann Grant, Dundee 26 December 1831.
Henry is shown as a joiner

I've found the death certificate for Mary Ann Grant - 3 November 1876,aged 62. Dundee
She was married to a John Tener, Justice of the Peace and previously to Henry Mitchelson, grocer.
No sign of a Mar* Mi*chel*son/Cairncross death or marriage.

The only marriages shown for a Marion Cairncross in Dundee around the correct time are:
9 July 1827 to Joseph Gibbs
29 June 1833 to William Burns
There could have been a common law marriage but the evidence suggests that, if Henry was the father, then Mary Ann Grant was the mother. I just can't find a Cairncross connection at the moment.

Thank you for your prompt reply! I cannot read the names of the witnesses on the marriage certificate unfortunately. Evidence points to his mother being Mary Grant... but why does he name Mary Cairncross? I have not been able to find the family in the 1841 census.... have checked England as well, but maybe there is an obscure spelling interpretation that I have missed! Another researcher states on his website that a marriage of Henry and Mary Cairncross has been found ...but where?
Thank you again for your replies.

Hi kbj
Can you give me the link to the website, please?
I did find a possible couple in Dundee on the 1841 but without a son. There was also a henry Mitchell aged 9 but that didn't seem to fit with him the older female in the household was an Elizabeth. I'll go back and find them again and put them up.
I've not found a death for Henry, snr. Maybe he died before 1855

Mary Ann Grant married John Tener in 1867 she was a widow, living at 20 Overgate.
In the 1861 there is this entry:
20 Overgate, Dundee
Mary Ann Grant, head, widow, 41, provision dealer, b. Dundee Mary Ann, niece, 23, b. Dundee and two female servants - writing is very poor.
So Henry, snr, died before 1861

The website I mentioned is www.familylobby.com/cove
Maybe I should email him again and ask for details. I will look again for a death of Henry Snr before 1861.
Thanks so much

Hi Gadget
Regarding the website if you click on the files and music on the left hand side then download the "Descendents of Amias Oliver Cove" you will find Henry's information. He's Descendant no: 78.

Hi,
Thanks for your interest. The owner of the website does not recall any further information about the marriage he mentions between Henry and Mary Cairncross. I am not sure if there is anywhere else I can look.
Cheers kjb
