John Ashton - Louth
« on: Tuesday 06 May 08 08:51 BST (UK) »

Hello All

I've found John with wife Elizabeth and children Henry, Mildred, Richard, Thomas, Joseph & Sarah on the 1841 in Lough.  John is listed as a farmer.  John was not born in county but the other family members were.

I can't find a marriage for John & Elizabeth on IGI or baptism records for any of the children.  The Hugh Wallis site doesn't help either.

I've found most of the children on later census returns, son Thomas is my interest.

There are 3 deaths listed for a John Ashton registered in Louth, two in 1844 and one in 1845.

According to the 1851, Elizabeth states her birthplace as Boston.

Does anyone have access to Louth and/or Boston PR's for this period please?

Is anyone else researching this family??

Regards

There are 3 deaths listed for a John Ashton registered in Louth, two in 1844 and one in 1845.

Burials
21 Aug 1844 an infant in Covenham St Barts
26 June 1844 Louth aged 68
14 Aug 1845 Louth aged 68

so only 2 possibilities now Smiley

Possible marriage-

16 May 1828 Louth
John ASHTON (wid) to Elizabeth COOK

Baptism 14 Feb 1793 Boston
Elizabeth COOK, dau of Wm and Mary

Burial 17 Jan 1827 Louth
Sarah ASHTON (42) - is that relevant?

Re the IGI: there are very few Louth baptisms in the 1820s to be found.

EDIT:  Getting extremely speculative now  Shocked ... There were some ASHTON baptisms in Crowle (by the Lincs border), children of John and Sarah, in 1810-18

John 1810
George 1814
Richard 1818 (died 1821)

Now ...
George ASHTON (36, born Crowle) appears in Louth in 1851
Your lot included a later Richard, perhaps named after the first one.

So perhaps the family of John and Sarah ASHTON migrated from Crowle to Louth, where she died, then John remarried.

Hello Geoff

You have been busy.

I did wonder if John had been married before given the age difference.

Had a look a Boston for Cooks and there is a William Cook born 1796 and  Mildred Cook born 1796 - same household.  There is a Mildred Ashton in John & Elizabeth's household - but am I putting 2 & 2 together and getting 5?

I don't know about the Sarah Ashton burial yet, but I've noted it.  There are 85 Ashtons in Louth in 1841 - most born in county but some not.

The '41 says Henry & Mildred of John & Elizabeth family are both 15.  If John was left a widower with these two as babies he would have remarried quickly.

Ashton seems to be a popular name, more so than I first thought.  There seem to be Ashtons in south Yorkshire too.

Re John & Sarah Ashton's children - 1841 in Louth there is a John Ashton age 25, a farmer, not born in county - could this be their eldest?

Many thanks Geoff for all your help, I will discuss this with my new "cousin" and see where we go from here.

Regards

I fear that would be riding the wrong horse  Shocked ...

If you look on the opposite page ---> Benjamin and Esther ASHTON ... look at IGI for John ASHTON 1810 Yorks

Benjamin in 1851 says born Ousefleet c1775 - I guess he was bap 1775 at Whitgift (IGI), son of Richard* ... Ben appears to have had a brother John 1777.  Hmmm - interesting - and remember Whitgift is only 6-7 miles from Crowle.

*We had some sons called Richard didn't we?  Smiley

EDIT:  Full marks for spotting Elizabeth COOK's sister, Mildred - every little helps!

This has actually taken shape quite well after starting with not very much.  Lots of circumstantial evidence of course.

I don't know this part of the country at all - so I need my road atlas, I need to look at the '51 census for birthplaces - and lots of paper.

I will, no doubt, be back for more.

Cheers
