Where is (or was) California in this county?

Hi there
I've been looking for California, Worcestershire as this has been entered in the 1891 and 1901 censuses as a distant relatives place of birth. I haven't found it on a Google search so thought I would ask here if anyone knew of the place (or if it even still exists?)

Any help would be very much appreciated

there is a California in Norfolk too, not far from Great Yarmouth

hi there i've just checked it out on 1888 OS map and it was on the borders of Staffs and Worcs by Bartley Green.


I go past this way often so if you need photos of anthing that may be still standing !!!
let me know ...but it is very built up tho

Out of interest - I'm at the Birmingham NEC for 2 days in a couple of weeks - is it easy enough to drop down too from there? I could try to take a look at the area at the same time if I don't get tied up with other commitments.

I entered this journey in the route planner of the AA ~ I put Weoley Castle, as I couldn't get California  come up.

It gave the distance as just over 14 miles; which it said would take about half an hour.

However ~ do note that in the rush 'hour' everything takes a lot longer!

If you look on streetmap.co.uk, you will see where California, Birmingham, is.

IT IS 20 MILES FROM MY HOUSE TO NEC,  then it takes me another 10 minutes to California way  when i go to work so really it would take you easily 30 minutes as you are not familiar with the area.

you need to head in the Quinton, Harbourne are.

do you have an adress for your ancestors, farm ? or lane ?

i will send you image of 1880's OS map if give me your email

Was it a mining area? The California area of Eston, North Yorkshire was given its name when someone discovered iron in the hills and people came rushing from all over the country to extract it.

This is from 'One Thousand Years of Brum' by Carl Chinn:

"In 1842, Isaac Flavell bought Stonehouse Farm on the borders of Bartley Green with Harborne. He was supposed to have made 'something of a fortune' in the gold fields of California and is said to have built the old 'California Inn' with his money. The pub name has now been given to the surrounding area ..."

So, that's the legend ...

Thanks for your offer - I've mailed you personally to reply.

I've taken a peek at the 1881 census for the address and it just states California, Northfield.
RG11/2952 Folio 82 Page 45

1871 is Stonehouse, Northfield
RG10/3084 Folio 95 Page 1

1861 is Peascroft[?] Lane, Northfield (a few entries previous on the page before is California)
RG9/2122 Folio 45 Page 27
