My great grandfather was an ag lab at Home Farm in California
on the 1901 census. This was part of Harborne. Home Farm was situated near what is now Kings Norton Golf Club ( Weatheroak )
I think you need a little more information as many areas are incorporated in the modern area of California.

Hi there

I must admit I've been there now and taken a few pictures of the area in general - mainly stonehouse more than anything as that was also one of their addresses (1871). I did do some looking up about the brickworks today (I got back yesterday) and the canal waters etc and find the information fascinating (it has also helped me confirm I was looking in roughly the right area too). Yes I agree with you that more information would help in locating the right area - not that anything there would remotely resemble what it was like over 100 years ago though. I plan to go back when I go anywhere near the area again for any reason - a bit more fully armed though.

One question though - if I did a day thing (rather than an evening dash) there on my own where would the best place be to go to access more information about the history of the area, the brickworks etc? (apart from whats available on the web.)

hello. Barbara

..Weatheroak is miles from Harbourne.....having looked on the OS map and compared with the ED description they definitely lived west of Selly oak in my humble opinion.

no nothing remotely resembles as it was , that is for sure, i'll look again , the prob with the OS maps of that time is that the part we are looking at is "cut" by a border line and makes it more difficult to read.
i'm going to go back to the 1881 enumeration district of your ancestors 1881 address and try to tie in in with the os map.

one  place that would have info would by Birmingham central library i would have thought.

Debz

I'll be back Barbara  Grin

Yes, the Central Library has also contains the archives and a good local history & genealogy section.

You may need to phone beforehand to check that the relevant departments are open, but opening hours can be found on their web pages:

Thanks for that! Very useful!!!

Some of the links I found related to the brickworks and the waterways I should post up shouldn't I?! I'll sort them out later after I've got over my night shift jet lag!!!!!

Regarding the modern maps having little relation to the area back then - at least a few 'markers'  from the census addresses around California such as Weoley Castle and Stonehouse in general initially help make X mark some kind of 'spot' when looking at Google maps!!
