I'm searching for the Russell (often spelled Russel) family, living in Edinburgh in 1841. Parents James and Rose came from Ireland, as did eldest child John. But other children are listed as born in Midlothian. I cannot find these children on the OPR's (Janet 1828, Sarah 1830, Rose 1832) despite using up a ton of credits at Scotland's People searching every which way. 1851 census gives slightly different details for these girls (Jane 1829, Sarah 1832) but I had that covered with a broad search. They're just NOT there. I was also expecting to find a Robert born 1831, nothing.
Any ideas anyone?

It did occur to me they might be Catholic, but Russell sounds like a family whose roots were in England, before Ireland, so I had them pinned as Protestants.
I went to the link you kindly provided and unfortunately the Scottish Catholic Archives don't (yet) cover Midlothian. But the comment about poor laws and the Irish could come in handy, even though this family appear to have arrived in Scotland earlier, somewhere between 1820 and 1828.

While I was at it, I had another look at the marriage record of Jane's son, and it was a Catholic marriage. I hadn't spotted that before, due to the terrible handwriting. OK, at least I know what I'm looking for now!

Even if they weren't Catholics, it is more than likely that they would not be on SP. This is because SP has pre-1855 records only of the OPRs i.e. of the established Church of Scotland. It does not have records of the many presbyterian groups which broke away from the Church of Scotland. Nor does it have records of Episcopalians or other denominations.

Scotland - HALL, HARLEY, LOCHTY/LOCHTIE/LOUGHTIE/LOUGHTY (very rare), MCLAUSE/MCLAWS/MCILHOSE/HOSE (quite rare and many very variable spellings - close to 100 to date), PHILP/PHILIP, VASSIE; Ireland - BOURKE/BURKE, DONOHUE (many spellings), DOOLEY, KINSELLA, MAXWELL, OSBORNE, RAFFERTY, STA(U)NTON, SULLIVAN; England - BAYES, BROWNELL, DALTON, FREEMAN, HACKING, PIERCY, SIDDLE, SWIFT, SULLIVAN, TINK(L)ER, TRIPPIT. Any spellings and many other names!

I see. It just seemed strange as it was the first time I hadn't been able to find at least some members of a family on there. I therefore conclude that the bulk of my Scottish ancestry was C of S.
