All Souls St Marylebone PR query
« on: Tuesday 06 May 08 13:27 BST (UK) »

Hi all,

I have found two children born to William and Emma Smith at All Souls Saint Marylebone on the IGI.

They are Thomas Joseph Smith (B: 1843, Bp: 1844)
and Robert Smith (B: 1848, Bp: 1848)

I know these two are part of one of my families as I found them in Brighton Sussex in 1851 census with parents.

BUT there is another child listed as well - still with parents William and Emma Smith.

George Smith B: 04.11.1843, Bp: 22.09.1844

He doesn't show on the 1851. He either died young or is not part of my lot.

Would enyone know if the Parish Registers at that time actually show the mother's surname? (It should be nee-Ginger)

Thanks

Di

hello, Di,

If you have no other sightings for George Smith born 1843 it is more than likely he died.  There are 5 possible deaths in Marylebone 1844 to 1851

Deaths for George Smith
Sept. ¼  1844  Marlyebone  1  128
June  ¼  1846   ditto   1  123
Dec ¼  1846   ditto   1  179
Sept. ¼ 1848    ditto   1   122
June  ¼  1850   ditto   1   167

Unlikely unless they weren't married but what would be shown is an abode and a fathers occuapation which may tie them together.

Would you like me to check these out on my travels?

Thanks Meliora for the records of death for George Smith.

It's very likely one of those will be mine - but which one??

Thanks Dawn for your offer. I don't really expect to find Emma's maiden name on the register but we always live in hope  Roll Eyes

If you do happen to find (in your travels!) the three boy's Baptism entries, would you mind looking for anything that ties them together - that would be a BIG bonus.

George Smith Bp: 22.09.1844
Thomas Joseph Smith Bp: 20.09.1846
Robert Smith Bp: 13.02.1848

On the 1851 census father (William) was listed as a "Brass Finisher" - hopefully he was listed as such in the previous decade. Sorry, don't know where they lived  Sad

Many thanks

Di

Hi Di

Made a start on the baptisms at the Westminster Archives today, they have the registers on microfilm, the originals are at the LMA.

George Smith, Parents William & Emma Smith, Abode 10 Saville Street, Quality Trade or Profession (QTP): Brass Finisher

Thomas Joseph Smith, the film is completely illegible (even the staff said 'oh dear'), I'll need to see the film at the LMA, if their's is bad I'll need to order the actual register,

Robert Smith, Parents William & Emma Smith, Abode 6 Henrietta Street, QTP Brass founder.

Hope this helps so far.

Did you ever sort out Emma Gingers marriage? You've got an old thread here

Hi Dawn,

So George WAS one of my lot! WOW. Wonders will never cease. I didn't think I'd get a confirmation to that without buying certs.

Thank you Thank you

AND

I now have a couple of addresses for them in the area  Grin Grin

Brilliant  Kiss

No - Sadly I haven't progressed any further about Emma Ginger's parentage. Having reread that thread now makes me want to find something further about the branch.

With the address that you have found I may now be able to find either William or Emma on the 1841 - or at least confirm which one is their record.

Many many thanks

Hi Di

Was at the LMA today and ordered the actual baptism register for All Souls as their film is in the same bad way as the one at Westminster Archives.

The register pages are of vellum and the ink has faded to a pale brown which when filmed in negative becomes almost unreadable.

So 1846 September 20th

Thomas Joseph son of William & Emma Smith, abode 6 Henrietta Street, QTP Gas Fitter

Hi Dawn,

Thank you so much for going to all that trouble - it is very much appreciated.

It does confirm that Thomas Joseph and Robert were brothers and George was VERY likely another brother.  Grin

Looks like I may order a death cert (or two) to see when George died.

Thanks muchly
