Parish records
« on: Tuesday 06 May 08 16:16 BST (UK) »

Just a quick question!

I now need to use Parish records to find the information I need. What is the best way to go about this? And does anyone have any advice or do's and don'ts?

David.

Might not be a quick answer  Wink

Find out where the parish registers have been deposited, you need a Phillimores Atlas for this. You should be able to see a copy at a large reference library or order and borrow a copy through the Inter-library loan service. If you're feeling flush, you can always buy a copy, it's not cheap book but worth the spend if you have a lot of counties to cover.

Once you find out where they are, they've usually been deposited at an Archive centre for safe keeping, check if the Archives have an on-line catalogue and have what you want then take a trip to check out either the originals if they'll let you or more commonly see a copy on microfilm.

If a trip is not possible, see if you have a local LDS family history centre.

http://www.hydeparkfhc.org/home.php

follow the link to other centres or see what they have in their catalogue

They can order in microfilm copies of parish registers they have in their depositories for a small fee. If you can get to Hyde Park, they have almost all the UK films there that they have been involved with.

If this isn't possible, track down a family history society for the area you are interested in. They may have published transcriptions on cd or microfiche which you can purchase. Most large, central-type libraries have microfiche readers or if you go down this route, you can sometimes get a 2nd-hand machine from a ceratin internet auction site, I got one for £20)

A quick tip about the International Genealogical Index produced by the Mormons (Latter Day Saints/LDS)

If you find an 'extracted' entry (look for the batch number and details), you must remember it is only an index. You need to see the original entry in the registers as mistakes can and have been made especially if what you've found doesn't exactly tie up with what you're looking for. Be even more wary of 'submitted' entries, a lot of these are peoples 'best guesses' and can bear little or no relation to the real event.

Hope this helps.

Some family history societies have put them on CD Rom (eg. Nottinghamshire).
Have a look at this site, too:
www.parishchest.com
Obviously there is a cost, but if you are a fair distance away, and your family are located in a particular area, it may be worth your while.

In addition to Dawn's suggestions I would add you may be able to purchase copies of the original registers on microfiche or microfilm from the relevant archive.
See the following page for details of counties which sell such copies-

GENUKI http://www.genuki.org.uk will tell you which records, Bishop's Transcripts, etc. are available for most parishes, and tells you where where records are kept. You need to persevere through various pages - United Kingdom & Ireland - England - Counties - Towns & Parishes before you reach the page with parish names, but it's very informative.

There are also some very helpful RootsChatters who will look records up for you, either because they have access to the Record Offices or because they have CDs of the records.  It's worth asking if you can't access the records yourself.

Many of the county boards here on RootsChat have a Resources section which lists known online indexes and transcriptions - useful as a starting point.

Nearly all county FHS publish their trasncriptions in some format - fiche, CD, book (less popular now) or they put them on sites such as FamilyHistoryOnline (the FFHS subscription site, being phased out and handed over to FindMyPast).  Always check out the IGI (online at http://www.familysearch.org ) - again a useful guide and starting point.

There is now a lot more available, but the archives themselves can never be beaten if you get the chance. Smiley

They deal with lots of suppliers and fhs - I ordered some things from them just before christmas - one I particularly asked if they could get it as quickly possible, as it was a present - service on that was absolutely amazing, yet something else I ordered (from a different supplier, as part of the same order) took much longer. Would have thought a download should be relatively easy, compared to posting, but then I don't know the process.
Let's hope it's with you later today.
