Hi Groom.
It's a bit too late to type much but have located the following info which may help.
Joshua(1761)was,it seems the grandfather of a Hayward of the Windsor Castle Inn on the Brighton Road,Croydon.
On the 1881 census the licensee of the Winsor Castle was James Hayward, aged 46 and he had a 15 y.o.son named Eleazar.
Regards, Dave.

Hi Groom.
The following is taken from Croydon in the Past,as published by the East Surrey Family History Society and is a list of MI's from Crodon Churches.
As I left off with Joshua yesterday,I will give the entry again.
Found on Gravestones at St.John the Baptist Church,Croydon. Elizabeth,wife of Joshua Hayward,d.June 18 1799,aged 37. Joshua Hayward,her husband d.Dec 31 1850,aged 93. (Grandfather to Mr.Hayward of the Windsor Castle Inn,Brighton Road) -------------------------------------- Benjamin Hayward,d.Aug 19 1816,a46. Also Benjamin son of abve,a most lovely infant and an only child.He was taken from his distressed parents Aug 24 1815 a2years and 2 months. -------------------------------------- St James Churchyard James Burton Hayward,drowned at Gallipoli June 5,1859 a18. Caroline Louisa Hayward,d.May 25 1866 a14. -------------------------------------- Thomas Hayward,d.May 26,1855 a38. Esther Wilhelma Hayward,his mother,d.April 11,1875. Richard William Hayward,his father,d.April 29,1824 a.43. Richard Hayward,eldest son of the above,d.July 2,1847 a.33. Francis Hayward,second son,d.June 9 1851 a.25. --------------------------------------- St.Peter's Churchyard. Martha Hayward,d.Feb 12,1871 a.62. Ebenezer Hayward,her husband,d.Feb 11,1872 a.63. Sarah Wood,her daughter,d.Oct 3,1879 a.30. --------------------------------------- Mary Elizabeth Hayward,d.Dec 25,1874 a.25. --------------------------------------- Jane Sophia,wife of Eleazer Hayward,d.April 17,1881 a.73. --------------------------------------- The Cemetery(Queen's Road Cemetery,Croydon) Isabella,wife of George Hayward,d.May 26,1863 a.52. Leslie George,her youngest son,died at Leghorn,July 20,1868 a.25. -------------------------------------- The following are taken from the Monumental Inscriptions of the Church of St.Peter,Croydon as published by the East Surrey Family History Society.
After the mention of Jane Sophia Hayward there is another entry which, although not named, may be Eleazer Hayward and reads, Also of the above(and there must be a name missing here)who departed this life Aug 28,1885 a.78 years. -------------------------------------- There is an addition after Sarah Wood which reads, Also of Alice Sophia, her infant daughter. -------------------------------------- In this index Mary Hayward is listed as, Maria Elizabeth Hayward, born Jan 25,1807,d.Dec 25,1874. with an addition, Also Richard, husband of above who died June 1,1884 a.71. -------------------------------------- It is worth noting that Croydon in the Past was originally published in book format in 1883,hence the M.I.'s of St Peter's contain some later entries. ------------------------------------- The 1811 Head of Household Census of Croydon lists the following Haywards.
Ben.,grocer,High St. Ebenezer, cabinet maker,High St. Jos.,gardener,Haling. Phisb(?),carpenter,Old Town. ------------------------------------- There was a Settlement Certificate granted by Croydon to a Thomas Hayward of Oxted on Dec 10,1753.
That is all I have.
Regards, Dave.

Hi Janet.
M.I.'s(Monumental Inscriptions)can either be "word for word" copies of that which appears on the grave or an Index which can give relevent information, but are more usually the former. The grave of Richard and Maria was presumably there in the mid 80's when the St.Peter's M.I.'s were transcribed, indeed it notes the area where that grave was, along with a drawn outline of the upright gravestone. The area is between Heathfield Road and St.Peter's Road, and between the driveway that passes the Church and the flint boundary wall beyond which is a footpath.
Along with any visit to St.Peter's,I would certainly recommend a visit to the Local History Library in Croydon, where you can see film of the registers of the Church of St.John the Baptist. This, being the Parish Church, would have been where nearly all Croydon baptisms would have taken place prior to about 1829,when the Church of St.James on Croydon Common became "operational".The library holds film of other Croydon churches.
Regards, Dave.
