I posted this elsewhere, and was advised to repost in the Northampton section so here goes....
After finding what I've needed from the 1841-1901 Ancestry.co.uk census collections. I've now had to go to the Parish Registers.
Being somewhat a newcomer, and a bank holiday weekend and some time off, I drove up to Northamptonshire from Swansea because I knew that an Ancestor of mine was Buried on 11/05/1895 aged 74 at Desborough Parish Church (Page 163, No. 1303).
So off I went, a headstone about a hundred years old shouldn't be too worn or damaged should it? Should be easy to find shouldn't it!
So I searched for Parish Churches on google and it came up with two!
Brilliant! This shouldn't take long at all! So I packed the camera and some food, checked the car then set off!
First stop was St. Giles, Desborough. Had a thorough look and he wasn't there. So that only leaves The Holy Trinity, Rothwell! Fantastic! A short drive later brought me there, and guess what! NOTHING!
What is going on??? HELP! What shall I do now?

Hi,
I can image how disappointed you must have been - not close by!
I can only assume you found the information on UK Parish and Probate on ancestry- I was going to look to see what the entry said, but don't know the name of the person you are looking for.
Did you try looking on the National Burials Index - on Findmypast?

His name was John Stevenson. Died in 1895 in Desborough.

This is probably going to disappoint you.
A burial entry in the parish register does not necessarily mean that there will be a headstone on the grave. Not everyone either chose to do this or could afford to do it. Late twentieth century graves in my family have no headstones. If I remember correctly, it was only about three hundred years ago that headstones as grave markers in church yards became common place.
Also if there is a headstone, the type and quality of the stone will influence how much of the inscription may have survived. Also whether much moss or lichen has taken up residence. Some headstones only 120 years old show little signs of the inscription while others, perhaps 250 years old, are still very clear.

I haven't been able to locate the entry on ancestry which you found - but it isn't easy to refine the search.
Did you find any Stevenson graves in Desborough - of any date?

Well, the death entry (Freebmd) confirms his age at death was 74 years and he died in the Kettering registration district area, which includes Desborough - Jun qtr vol 3b page 102.
Northamptonshire FHS have done monumental inscriptions for St.Giles, at Desborough - published 1998.
There's a copy in SOG in London - should be one in Northants archives, too. The local studies library (Northampton library) might have it , too. Northamptonshire FHS are very helpful and I'm sure will respond to you enquiry.
Just remembered that we had a lovely lady who works in Kettering Library who came to speak to our fhs about sources in the library, including help sessions. She is an experienced researcher in family history and does brickwall sessions with anyone who needs it. You just need to contact her, and make an appointment, or maybe she would speak to you on the telephone. Obviously this is her area and she knows it very well. She will know all the sources available - newspapers (for death notices - which might give burial location), cemeteries, churchyards, etc.
Just found her name - Andrea Pettingale - lovely lady with very infectious interest in her subject.
As I mentioned you can contact her at the library at Kettering.
But, sadly, like Little Nell said it might no longer be traceable, if it was there in the first place.
At least if you investigate all the possibilites for tracing the grave you will have done what you can.
Such a shame, after going all that way.
This time it might be worth asking the Kettering Branch of the Northamptonshire FHS if anyone is willing to check before you go - I know it's not the same as finding them yourself.

If you look on SOG website
www.sog.org.uk
and click on SOGCAT that brings up the search facility for their catalogue. Then type in Northamptonshire MIs and it will list the different volumes available. These will be at SOG obviously, but available elsewhere, too.
That way, you can narrow down your area and know what is available. You could be lucky!
