Could someone with a knowledge of Inverness help me with information on some locations?
First, can you tell me roughly where the addresses below were? Second, can you tell me is they are still there?
I did look for these places when I visited Inverness some years ago when I first started my researches, but of course, now I can't remember what's there and what's not. But I do know Petty Street is not there.
64 & 65 Petty Street c 1856 - 1862 37 High Street c 1862 - 1866 1 Barnhill c 1865 - 1867 64 Castle Street c 1868 3 Meat Market Close c 1868 - 1870 1 Argyle Street c 1870 - 1876
And if it's not too mush of an ask, what were the houses like - tenements; slums; above shops; etc? What kind of people lived there - artisans; well-to-do; empoverished? Would you say they were moving up, down or staying about the same in society?
These are the addresses for one family over a relatively short period of time which might indicate - certainly if they lived in Glasgow - that they were having problems paying the rent, but that might not be the case in Inverness as all the addresses are within a short walk of each other.
Any help, opinions and suggestions gratefully accepted.

Hi
If you Click Here
You'll see the location of Argyle Street. Castle Street is the pink road marked B861. The High street is the unmarked street that runs l/r from the B861 to what is labelled as Crown Road. It is now pedestrianised. I'm not sure about Meat Market close.
If you move around on the map you might find the others. Most of the housing are tall tenement type buildings but Argyle Street is lower terraced housing as far as I can remember.
I used to use Inverness pretty regularly (once a fortnight) when Ilived permanently in the Highlands.

Hi Grey Seagull
Petty Street ran from the east end of what's now called High Street to the outskirts of town (from what I can find out it seems to follow the road now known as the Eastgate, where the shopping centre is).
Barnhill - In James Miller's book "Inverness" he says "On Barnhill houses were going up for tradesmen and professionals of more moderate means; these are now the streets of the Crown, with their rows of single and two-storey cottages." The Crown is the area "up the hill" from the High Street.
Mealmarket Close still exists and I'm sure it's MeaL rather than MeaT). It's a narrow close (as the name suggests) that runs from the High Street to Baron Taylor's Street (hopefully that should give you enough info to find it on a map).
A lot of my ancestors have turned up in Castle Street too - I think there were a lot of households that took in lodgers in this area.
Hope some of this helps! Lynn

Just had some other thoughts, as I'll be passing through in the next few days
Meat Market Close could be somewhere around where the old covered market is - opposite the Rail Station on Academy Street and running through to Church Street (also in the process of being pedestrianised).
The area where Argyle St is is much higher than the centre proper. The land rises steeply to the south from the High Street with little steep stairs/alleyways. The main route to this area by car is via Castle Street or from the A9 exit at Inches/Hospital.
If you are there again, call in at Leakey's Book Shop, at the top of Church Street - a second hand book store second to none. Charles has masses of local books and there's a nice little cafe there as well

Hi Lynn,
You have now answered three of my questions: re Petty St etc; Resolis & Gordon's Mills; Kilmichael at Drumnadroichit. I just realised this when I was doing a browse through the Surname interests.
Not having much luck there: everytime I find a possible and click on the link, can't find the name I was looking for! Your name came up with Stewarts in Fodderty: is that right or have I got my wires crossed?
Regards, Win

It's excellent coffee and really good soup at lunch time and you can read any of the books while you're there
I'm not sure how long I'll be there this time or I'd offer to take some photos for you.

Hi Win
Here's a link to the Am Baile website and a photo of Mealmarket Close - I don't think it's changed much over the years!

Best wishes Lynn

Managed a couple of hours today at Leakies: good food, coffee, maps and prints. Sadly no time for books or 'house hunting'. Thanks for pointing me in that direction!

1. 93-5 Academy Street - my husband's grandfather PETER FRASER , a 'Spirits merchant' was lessee of an hotel at this address (from 1905 to 1928) owned by a William McAllister (Wine and Spirits Merchant). (Presently called 'Blackfriars Inn', the building has been there since about 1793, when it apparently was a 'General Provision Store/Grocers'.) Also the above William McAllister iin 1901 Census is shown as owning an Hotel at 1 ACADEMY STREET. I think this may be possibly on corner of Baron Taylor's Street, where is situated the "Moray Inn"?. (PETER was married at this Inn in 1905 (46 yrs) to ELIZABETH CLARK (43)) In 1901 Census, William's father Thomas McAllister is Hotel-keeper of 'Grant's Close Hotel' (Grant's Close runs off Baron Taylor's Street) - and ELIZABETH CLARK (single) was working there as Housekeeper, age 39. Her marriage certificate IN 1905 also shows her as a Housekeeper, at the Northern Hotel, High Street. Can anyone help with information about all or any of the above Hotels and their locations? I had had valuable input from the Archives Dept. of Highland Council, re Peter, but am just wanting some background info. on the years of his life. Ruth (in Australia)

Further query - anyone know the location of 'Bengal Cottage', Ballifeary - Glenurquhart Road? Several of my husband's relatives were living there in late 1800's early 1900's. Above message's PETER FRASER/ELIZABETH FRASER may also have been living there after 1905. Ruth Macleod
