Looking for the parents of Edward Traverse and Mary Parkinson
« on: Tuesday 06 May 08 22:51 BST (UK) »

Hi All,

I'm trying to find the parents of my 3G grandparents Edward Traverse and Mary Parkinson.  Edward was born in St. Helen's around 1803 and Mary in Warrington (should I post this to the Cheshire board as well? - Warrington was in Lancashire in the 19thC) around 1803.  They were married in Warrington on 2nd June 1823.

Does anyone have access to Warrington and St. Helen's parish records?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Kevin

Hi,

You could try www.sthelens-connect.net

They have some parish records on their website and plenty of people that may be able to help.

Best of all it is free to join

Dear Kevin

Found the marriage entry on the Lancs OPC site - don't know if you already have it: -

Marriage: 2 Jun 1823 St Elphin, Warrington, Lancashire, England
Edward Traverse - of This Parish
Mary Parkinson - of This Parish
    Witness: Thomas Powell; Thomas Southern
Married by Banns by: R Fallowfield Offg Minister
    Register: Marriages 1818 - 1824, Page 259, Entry 776
    Source: LDS Film 1562960

There's also this entry - could be connected: -

Marriage: 22 Feb 1852 St Wilfrid, Farnworth near Prescot, Lancashire, England
Edward Traverse - 23 Engineer bachelor of St. Helens
Jane Hall - 20 spinster of St. Helens
    Groom's Father: Edward Traverse
Bride's Father: William Hall, Glass blower
    Witness: B Hall; B Thompson
Married by Banns by: Jas. Coward, Curate
    Register: Marriages 1850 - 1857, Page 47, Entry 94
Source: LDS Film 1655236 item 4

Best wishes

Maria

Hi Miriam,

Thanks for the marriage entries.  Interesting that it says Edward Traverse is of this parish, as I thought he was from St. Helens.  Also very useful to have the church name and the witnesses.

I think the 1852 entry is one of his sons.  The dates certainly work.

Thanks for all your help.

Interesting that it says Edward Traverse is of this parish, as I thought he was from St. Helens.  Also very useful to have the church name and the witnesses.

He might just have moved to Warrington for the period that banns were being read.  As I understand it, if he was from a different parish, then they would have to pay for banns to be read in both parishes.

A great deal of my lot are from the same parish on their marriage certificates, when they very probably weren't really.

When these ancestors were saving money by having banns read in one parish, did they not realise the headache they were causing for their descendants!!

I guess it's all part of the fun of amateur genealogy!
