Help please to verify data?
« on: Tuesday 20 May 08 23:51 BST (UK) »

Could someone please help me with my puzzle concerning my 3xGt Grandmother, Ann please?

She married David Coultas b. 21 Oct 1823 and she appear with him on the 1851, 1861, 1871 censuses.  There  are many Ancestry trees that she features in and they all have her listed as Ann Astin.

I can only find her before her marriage in the Ancestry BMD as Ann Austing when she married David Coultas in 1846.  Austing does not feature as a surname for anyone else on the Ancestry database, so maybe mistranscribed.  These other trees have a birth date for her of 12 Jan 1824, so I assume that they have found her official details, but there are so many wrong details on Ancestry I would like to cross check but can't find a starting point.

No one seems to have any information about the Astins further back from Ann, but it appears that she was born in Halifax.

I only have access to Ancestry.co.uk and would really apreciate it if someone could check out her details from another source please?  Cheesy

kind regards,
Jill

Hi

A copy of their marriage cert will give her fathers name which may make tracing her easier.  The full GRO index does show her surname as Austing.  Another source of checking would be to get a copy of one of their childrens birth certs which will give her maiden name

Somebody may have started her off as Astin incorrectly and others have then just copied it without checking - particularly if the original person put the tree on the internet

There is an Ann Asting on the 1841 census for Halifax

Thomas Asting 45
Ann Asting 15
Betty Asting 15
Edwin Asting 13
Emma Asting 13
Thomas Asting 7

However - Thomas aged 45 is shown at the end of the entry on the image - not as you would expect if he was the children's father - although they are all at the same address

Carole, thanks so much for this further check.  I don't know how you all find so much on the GRO index, everything I try says "no match found".

This looks very likely to be the family as our family "naming rites" are particularly strong and consistent throughout the generations.  Ann  has children named after all these siblings and so it looks like my starting point.  As I already had all my Gt Gt Grandmother's details I have never bothered to get her birth certificate, but I will do that!!!

Again a million thanks!

Thanks for this extra information Dave. I really appreciate it.  Either of these families fit.  The second is interesting, because of the sibling names.  Ann Astin (1 of them at least) is my 3xGt Grandmother.  My 2xGt Grandmother was Martha and my Gt Grandmother was Harriet.  The naming rites were quite reliably passed down and this is the first time I've come across another Harriet!!

I can see that I will have to order some certificates, but how can I be sure I have the right Ann even then??  What is a "delver" mother?Huh  Huh

I really do appreciate this help.

Sorry my bad grammar, a delver works in a quarry - Thomas's trade,  mother should apply to Sarah.

http://www2.halifaxtoday.co.uk/calderheritage/calderhome.htm

gives some interesting information about quarrying and mining in the area.

I find that if I'm unsure, I order certs one at a time and from the local registry office rather than GRO.

This is all great information to follow up thanks Dave!

I will be back in England in August and am thinking of visitiing some cemeteries to try and find out some more information on some of my family lines. This looks like another relative to add to my growing list of people to track down when I'm there. It might be easier to pour through records, I've just noticed that most of the records I want are not available to order on-line from Australia.
