Hi Beckey,
I had a check on the IGI and all children to Robert BERTRAM and Jane RATTRAY were born in Lauder, Berwickshire. However, none of the boys were named Robert! There was a John in 1858 though - do you think he may have been registered as one name, but later used another?

Hi Beckey and Hume
Son Robert looks to have been born c. 1854, probably why he doesn't necessarily show on IGI. From the 1861 Census:
Robert Bertram 30, gardener, b. Edinburgh Jane Bertram 33, wife, b. Cathy Toll, Selkirkshire Alexander Bertram 8, Blainslie, Roxburghshire Robert Bertram 7, b. Blainslie, Roxburghshire James Bertram 5, Chapel, Berwickshire Barbara Bertram 4, Chapel, Berwickshire John Bertram 1, Chapel, Berwickshire Janet Bertram 1 Month, Chapel, Berwickshire Jim Ken 23, servant Jane Bertram 39, servant, b. Tirulin, Dumfries
Address: Chapel, Lauder

According to the 1881 census he was born about 1855 Blainslie ?,Berwick, had a look on the map North of Melrose.
Father Robert died after marriage of Robert and Ann, Jane before, the reason for looking, he was witness to his grandfather in Law's James Wait death in 1880.

From Genuki at www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/ROX/Melrose/blainslie.html
"BLAINSLEE, a village in the north-east extremity of the parish of Melrose, Roxburghshire. It stands on the right bank of the Leader, 3 miles south-south-east of Lauder, on the road thence to St Boswells." from the Imperial Gazetteer of Scotland, edited by John Marius Wilson, 1868.
