Sarah Kerr was born in 1890 at Cargenbridge, she had a sister Jane born 1887 likewise in Troqueer and another sister Margaret born in 1895. Her brothers were James born 1885, Hugh Wallace born in 1888 and David John born in 1892. Their parents were John Kerr and Margaret m. s. Wallace. I have been trying to find out if Sarah married and to whom and when she died. Can anyone shed any light?. Thanking you stoop.

Hi stoop
This is a little tricky! I see she's with her parents in Troqueer (Kirkcudbrightshire) on the 1901. With the parish being so close to Dumfries she might be one of a few Sarah Kerrs who married in the 1906-1932 period. There's a possible marriage in Buittle but not enough to go on and it's rather late - 1931
I've not yet found a death with mother's name Wallace which would indicate if she had married or not.
Do you have any information on the rest of the family that might help the search?

Mother Margaret died, 1917, Maxwelltown, Troqueer, aged 61 and brother David was living in Dumfries at the time, so at least some of the family remained in the area.
Margaret's parents were Hugh Wallace, shoemaker and Jane, m.s. Wilson, both deceased.

Thanks for your response gadget. Indeed it is tricky and very frustrating. Hugh married ,because he was my grandfather and David married too, James I have not been able to locate or indeed Margaret after 1901 considering the direct line during all my researching I think this is the most irritating wall I have come across. I suppose there is the likelihood that they all left the shire. Any suggestions would be most appreciated, regards stoop.

Hi stoop
There are 91 marriages for a Sara* Kerr in Scoland between 1905 and 1932 and there are 63 deaths between 1901 and 2006 with DoB of 1890 +/- 5. As I said before, none of these deaths mention Wallace as another or mother's surname.
I think it might be worth having a look for any local records - newspapers in particular - that might give some clues. For example obituary/funeral reports of her mother in 1917 or her father (pre-1917) or of the siblings that you know about.

It may well be a source of information regarding Sarah or indeed Margaret and James. I will contact the archivist in Dumfries library and ask for her help. I have trawled through all the death records relating to Sarah Kerr with the birth year being the exact one, it reduced the numbers but still her details remain elusive. It is always problematic when there is not a middle name, thanks again gadget regards stoop.
