I am looking for the court records of my ancestor Andrew DAMMERY. The information I have obtained indicates he was tried at the Kent Assizes in July 1834 and sentenced to 14 years. He arrived in Australia on 6 April 1835. I think he was 18 when convicted.
His transportation records list him as DUMMERY and there are records here in Australia that list him as DAMERY. His kids became DEMMERY, so pretty much anything goes!
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Tony (in Sydney)

Hi www.pastfinders.net has him on their unclaimed convicts page.
Lesley Ubel on her Australian convicts site has him aged 18 convicted of stealing 2 pigeons and a handerkerchief, sentenced to 14 years and transported on the Lady Nugent (1) in 1835

Many thanks for the reply Carolyn, sorry to be so long responding - I've been away plus had a funeral to attend, so only getting a chance to get back to this now. This information confirms one of the sources I previously had and rule out both a second source and family legend about why he was sent to Australia.
The pastfinders site makes reference to a local newspaper report from July 1834 - does anyone know if these would be accessible online? I'd be interested in seeing what they said.
Reagrds,
Tony

Hi Tony
The local studies departments at Maidstone and Canterbury libraries hold the main newspapers for Kent (apart from the British Newspaper Library at Colindale, London). I would try Maidstone first - current contact details http://kent.gov.uk/LibrariespublicUI/OpeningTimes/LibraryDetails.aspx?id=52
As far as I am aware, they will research up to half an hour for free.
Do let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the information on the Library - unfortunately I'm in Sydney, so a visit isn't possible! Tony

Hi Tony Noticed your posts re the Demmery family. My cousin and I have had cause to look at this family extensively to solve a problem we had tracing an uncle. We live in Wagga Wagga as do some of your relatives. Andrew is buried here. There is quite a substantial amount of information so would love to share with you. I am new to this site so don't know the protocol as to whetherto add my email address here. Hope to hear from you regards glensmum
