2) if someone could tell me please if they had children?!?!?! ie....is this my tom???

Im details of thomas that i have are - he was a licenced victualler
he had died by the time his son (john william wright)got married in 1922
also the son used the name john william elgie!!!!

Hi Luc666

Have you got a copy of the 1922 marriage certificate.  This should give you, among other things, John's age and the name and occupation of his father.  If you have John's age you may be able to identify John from the four or more possibles listed in the Freebmd index:

John William Wright born in Stockton between 1881 and 1891
1883 Jul-Sep 10a 49
1883 Jul-Sep 10a 76
1885 Jul-Sep 10a 73
1890 Apr-Jun 10a 99

I said that there may be more because there are also John William Wrights born in neighbouring districts - Aukland, Durham, Middlesborough and Teesdale.  And of course there are also large numbers of possibles listed as William John Wright!

If you have not got the wedding certificate then you really do need to splash out your £7 and get a copy and then we can really start to investigate.

Good luck

Hi Luc6666

One thing I forgot to mention, my Granny was christened Jane Frances Hasted Thompson.  Hasted was the maiden name of her mother and Granny passed the name on to her daughter, Lily Hasted Harland.  I do not know why the name was so important to them, Gx2granddad was just a mariner and as far as I know we are not related to any really famous Hasteds.  None of them used the name as part of a double-barrelled surname but I have seen that done in other families.

Good luck

Hi Luc666

One other thing that I forgot to mention relates to Jane's age when John was born.  If Jane was about 16 when she married in 1853 she would be 46 in 1883 and it is just about possible that she could give birth to John round about that time.  However I suspect that if she and Thomas are related to John then they are more likely to be the grandparents.  It is quite likely that they would start a family in the mid 1850s and any sons born before 1860 would be old enough to be producing children in the 1880s.

Good luck

luc666,

put me straight... is your target a Thomas Wright who married Jane Elgie in 1853.. or a Thomas Elgie Wright ?

You say that "he" was a licensed victualler. Where and when ?

And "his" son , John William, must have been between 31 and 41 when he married in 1922. Where was the 1922 marriage ?

You say the 1853 marriage was in Stockton. I can see that it was registered with Stockton District Registration Office, which in the 1850s covered a wide area including Hartlepool and Middlesbrough.

There is a candidate for the Jane Elgie (who married Thomas Wright in 1853) on Census 1851, ref 2383-784-12. In her widowed-mother's lodging house in Stockton town... Jane born c1827 in Northallerton, Yorkshire.

At page 2383-663-41 there is a candidate for Thomas Wright nearby in Stockton.. a soda-water maker... also born Yorkshire.

Only candidates, mind you. Also remembering that this couple if they were a couple, might not even be "yours".  Ouch !

Hi luc666 & Michael

The 1861 census has Thomas Wright, widower, soda water manufacturer, living with his 7 year-old son, Frederick Thomas, and a sister Ann acing as housekeeper in Stockton (RG9 3692 56 p7).

Freebmd has three Jane Wright deaths registered between Oct 1853 and Sep 1860.

In 1871 Thomas had remarried (Eleanor) and Frederick, 17, was still with him and both were described as soda water manufacturers (RG10 4906 47 p31).

Freebmd has a Thomas Wright marriage Dec 1866 in Stockton and here is the name Eleanor J Wright on the same page in the index.

In 1881 there was a Frederick Wright, 27, retired soda water manufacturer, living in Middleton St George with his wife Katherine A and a 2 year-old daughter Abigail I (RG11 4890 70 p47).

Freebmd has a Frederick Thomas Wright marriage Mar 1878 in Stockton and a Catherine Annie is on the same page.  I cannot find an entry for the birth of Abigail in 1879 but there is an Abigail Lucetta W Wright registered in Darlington (includes Middleton St George) in Mar 1881.

Infuriatingly I cannot find the family in the 1891 census so I have not been able to demonstrate the existence or non-existence of a link with John Angry

All the best
