John's story of embarrasment at school brought back a memory that I'd buried...
At history lessons I had to read a passage from a book. I described Alexander the Great's sacking of "Percy - polis". OK - now I know it's Per-CEP-olis.

This one makes me chuckle; Kirkudbright - pronounced "Ker-coo-bree"  I was justgoing to post that one!!
For years i had been asking for Cockburn port (as it sounds) when in fact it is Coburns.

I love the English place names - a recent favourite - Leominster . No one has mentioned the old favourite, Grosvenor.
OH's surname is Wright, and people STILL ask how to spell it (every time, they ask, "is that with a W"?) .... I despair sometimes ...

My surname is Coleman- I can understand people not putting the E in it.
But we've even had it spelt COALMAN.........I ask you,has anyone ever heard of it being spelt like that before
