John's story of embarrasment at school brought back a memory that I'd buried...

At history lessons I had to read a passage from a  book. I described Alexander the Great's sacking of "Percy - polis". OK - now I know it's Per-CEP-olis.  Embarrassed

I know of somebody with the surname Balluck [pronounced BA LUCK] his mother insists it is BAA LOOK.

I love the English place names - a recent favourite - Leominster  Wink. No one has mentioned the old favourite, Grosvenor.

OH's surname is Wright, and people STILL ask how to spell it (every time, they ask, "is that with a W"?) .... I despair sometimes ...

My surname is Coleman- I can understand people not putting the E in it.

But we've even had it spelt COALMAN.........I ask you,has anyone ever heard of it being spelt like that before Grin
