Buried in Bulawayo (1937)
« on: Tuesday 20 May 08 13:15 BST (UK) »

Would nayone on this board be able to advise me how to locate a grave in Bulwayo? Are there any indices online?

My grandfather's unmarried elder brother (b. 1879 in south London) was a mining engineer in Southern Africa (in the Transvaal and later in Matabeleland) and died of stomach cancer in about 1937.

Any help or advice would be most welcome.

Hello Ruth,

I guess I'm not really surprised that there is nothing on line.

My great-uncle was Roland Matthias Alfred Levy.

Despite the surname, he was not Jewish, although his father had been.

Thanks, Justin

Ruth,

Is that Hermanus near Cape Town?

Probably too far away from Bulawayo. Although the year and place of death was from my late father's memory, and he was about 8 or 9 at the time.

Do you have any further details?

Not much more I'm  afraid - just the date of death is the 14/11/1936 and the plot no B1908.
There is aslo an estate notive in the Transvaal archives for a Roland Levy in 1937 - may be well worth the effort getting this. This is the only reference to a Roland Levy in the national archives. To order a death notice see the stickys at the top of the board.

Ruth,

I had not even thought to check NAAIRS. Thank you.

The only thing that makes me a bit cautious is the omission of my Roland's two middle names in the file description.

What do you think?

I agree but for the small amount it costs. it is worth it as it is the only mention of Roland I can find.
