Perhaps you just need to clear it from the clipboard Erin. Click Edit (along the top) then Office Clipboard. Click on the arrow next to the item, it lets you delete the individual item or all of them

When I click on edit I have "clear" and "de" beside it, clicking on that does not seem to do any thing

Can you locate the file called "Normal.dot" on your PC - a search of files in Explorer should find it.  Note its size in kilobytes.  It should be about 28KB.  If it is any bigger then I suspect that the census image has been saved within this file and this is the template that Word uses to create all new documents.

You can safely delete this file ( or rename it to something completely different) and then open Word in the normal way.  It should recreate the template as per its original default settings - with no census image within it.

This works on Word 2000 by the way.  I can't say if it would work on later versions.

normal.dot should be located in:-

C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

My one is 29kb.

The folder Application Data may be hidden so you will have to go into Folder Options via Control Panel to unhide it.

Are you running Windows XP?

If so, click on the Start button in the bottom left of the screen.

Then click on the magnifying glass with "Search" alongside it.  It should be in the right-hand column of two which appear in the menu.

A box will appear with green arrows down the left hand side.

Choose the third option down: "All files and folders"

In the top box labelled "All or part of the file name" type "Normal.dot" (without the " of course)

Then click the "search" button and wait for the results.

Once it completes the search, click on the file named "Normal.dot" to highlight it.  Then you can hit the delete button.

Does that help you?

Not until your are sure which one you should keep.

What about the other two?

You open the files to see what is in them.  Basically you are looking for an empty one and it should be in the location I mentioned previously:-

C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

If the one that is 63kb contains your census data and is in the correct location, then open the file and delete the data inside the document and then save it.

You will then have to change the file permissions to READ ONLY to prevent you from saving the file again when it contains data.

Hi all!

Watching this topic with interest as we have been having problems with our Normal.dot for some time - problems opening existing documents, etc., and constantly being asked if we want to save the changes that have been made to Normal.dot (usually say 'no').

We run Windows 98 2nd edition and have Word 2000.

Have checked Templates and our Normal.dot is 1.54 MB!!!! Shocked

There were also 3 hidden files, which when unhidden turned out to be ~WRL2902.tmp, ~WRL3397.tmp and ~WRL3757.tmp, giving the Templates folder a total of 3.92 MB  Huh

Can the .tmp files be deleted and what about the Normal.dot?

Any help gratefully accepted please, thank you!   Grin

Kind regards and God bless you,

The .tmp files can be removed safely ..... they most likely were left behind when Word shut down unexpectedly at some time.

As regards the 1.5 Mb .dot file ........ as said the normal size for the normal.dot template file is 27 - 28 Kb a fraction of that size. If you are uncertain about deleting it - right click on it and select "rename" and choose something that makes sense to you (just in case you have to switch back) e.g. oldnormaldot.xyz.
Start word and it should start a new template and once you are happy with that you can then delete the old normal file that you renamed.

Falkryn beat me to it!  So glad that worked.  We first encountered the problem while running Win98SE and Word 2000.  I've lost count of the times I deleted that wretched file!
