Studley isn't very big, even now.
I'm guessing that there were just a few cottages along the main road.
There are still some timber-framed buildings there ~ perhaps thy are the ones??

There is definitely a lovely RC church along the Alcester Road in Studley.

You can get an idea of what Studley was like in 1890 if you go to:
www.old-maps.co.uk

You will see the RC church.

Catholicism seems to have been quite strong in that area ~ I believe that Guy Fawkes and co met up at nearby Coughton Court.

Gig

Two of my aunts both lived in Alcester Road, Studley, though not in the 19th Century! My grandparents also lived on Alcester Road for a time.
I had a look on ancestry to find your ancestors. The enumerators for this part of Studley didn't seem to give house numbers did they?

I found Margaret A Cottrill (Wife of James born 1832) on the 1901 census. She seems to be living in Holt Road. She is now a widow. The previous page has her son Frederick, now married. He is living at the Royal Oak Inn, Alcester Road. I tried to check some more, but the ancestry site must be busy as I can't view any censuses at the moment. I wonder if the Royal Oak is still there? I don't live nearby so I can't check this out.

I will try and search some more another time when ancestry is not so busy.

It seems that The Royal Oak is still there ~ at 144, Alcester Rd, Studley, Warwickshire, B80 7NT'

'The Royal Oak is a traditional pub with a great atmosphere.'
And there's a photo!

I'm wondering if it's the pub I visited with my husband recently. It could be.

The wife's G-grandmother on her 90th birthday

Re: help find house please ,studley
« Reply #11 on: Friday 05 September 08 16:00 BST (UK) »

My wife thinks you are a distant relative. Francis James' sister, Margaret Mary Theresa Cottrill (b 1881) was her grandmother.

James Cottrill, professor of music, married Margaret Ann Hayward (b 1835, Redditch, Worcestershire) in Glasgow 9 Oct 1855. They had 3 children whilst in Glasgow -

Louisa Jane  b 1856   d 1858
Francis James b 1859
John B   b 1860

(Years are approximate, as they are taken by subtracting ages from census dates - crude, I know)

They moved to Studley after the 1861 census and had 10 more children, I've got 8 of them and have possibles for 2 more.

Your gggg grandfather (James snr) married Sarah Ann Handcock (b1812 Studley, d 1882). He died in 1888 - both death are registered in Alcester.

I'm still working on my wife's side of the family, so it's nowhere near complete.

Hope this is of interest.
