Michael Inglefield 1787 Sussex
« on: Thursday 08 May 08 09:39 BST (UK) »

You were all so helpful with my last Inglefield query I thought I would test you all again.

I am looking for the Parents and place of birth of Michael Inglefield (Ingerfield and various other spellings), born abt 1787 in Sussex.
I know he married Sarah Martin in East Grinstead on the 9th May 1813. But when I have searched the only Inglefields I can find in East Grinstead are Michaels children and familys ( right up until 1901)  I don't think he was born in East Grinstead, as there are no other Inglefields in East Grinstead, so where was he born and who were his parents. Where did the Ingerfields originate from.
Can anyone help.
Thank you all so much for your time

Hi Jooles,
Firstly, how do you know he was born 1787 in Sussex, census?  At the time of his marriage he was 'of East Grinstead'.  Looking at the distribution map on the Sussex Marriage Index most of the Inglefield marriages occur in those parishes bordering on Kent.  It doesn't look much of a Sussex name as there are only 30 on the index from 1594.  A quick look on the IGI tends to suggest the name had very strong Berkshire roots  Undecided

In the 1841 census he remarried Elizabeth so I know the year is about right but thinking
about it your right it doesn't say where he was born, just that he was living in East Grinstead, and
he was dead by the 1851 census.  I just
presumed that back then people didn't travel far. Maybe I'll
need to re think.
Thanks for your thoughts

It does say "yes" for born in county in 1841.  Would not be the first time that was wrong though!  When did he marry Elizabeth?  It does not show on the SMI.  Could it be after 1837?  Have you looked?

In the 1841 census he does say he was born Sussex...but that could be a fib  Shocked  Also the enumerator has written actual ages rather than rounding them down, so at 51 his dob is about 1790.
It looks like he has died by 1851.  There is a death reg. for Michael Inglefield Q4 1842, East Grinstead.  Elizabeth is to be found with her son from her previous marriage;

1851 - East Grinstead  HO107/1641/323/21

Michael Brooker Head  wid  45  ag lab  b. East Grinstead
Elizabeth Inglefield  wid  mother  67  Poor Relief  b.  East Grinstead
Benjamin Brooker  15  son  Errand boy                            ditto
Henry Brooker         4                                                       ditto

There are 2 possible first marriages for Elizabeth;

East Grinstead, West Sussex,   17 Apr 1803:
Thomas BROOKER
Elizabeth MITCHELL, botp (B)

East Grinstead, West Sussex,   18 Oct 1806:
James BROOKER
Elizabeth HUGGETT, botp (B)

But I rather think it's the second marriage to James as there is a baptismal entry on the IGI for a Michael Brooker 1809 East Grinstead s/o James & Elizabeth,

Thank you so much for that.
At least I can add Elizabeths maiden name in to my tree.

When I was doing the look-ups on the last thread, I came across what could be the possible marriage of Michael and Elizabeth Brooker (formerly Huggett), but never got round to posting it, so here it is:

27th April 1840
Old Church, St Pancras, London

Michael Ingarfield
Elizabeth Brooker or Haggett

IGI Batch No. M047932

There is a James Brooker on the St Swithuns burial register, but no Thomas.

21st March 1830
James Brooker, age 51
of Ashurst Wood
