Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone could help me find a picture of St. George's Church on Wheeler Street in Birmingham. I've tried googling, but, I'm just not coming up with anything Embarrassed

Hi Karen, this has been a real slog but it maybe that I've found something. Like you googling did not produce much apart from these questions.

How sure are you it was in Wheeler Street & what years are you looking for?

Here's what I've found:

click on this link & then scroll down left hand pane to click on St George. This tells you St George was formerly at Great Hampton Row/Tower Street which isn't far from Wheeler Street but far enough. Demolished 1959/60.

click on this link & near bottom of page it says "The Wheeler Street membership was not able to use any part of the premises for nearly six years. In the meantime the members met at St. Georges Church , Heathfield Rd., Handsworth". Heathfield Road is about half a mile away from Wheeler Street.

click on this link for St George Church in Newtown area of Birmingham, where Wheeler Street might be classed as being in today. If you then click on 'Church History' it reads "The original St. George's was consecrated in 1822 and became a parish church in 1830. Despite extensive renovation, dry rot had damaged the building beyond repair and it was demolished in 1960". There is photo of new church & etching of old one but no address, so maybe you will have to contact them to find out street name. This would appear to be same church as in first link above.

Finally, this link takes you to a forum discussing St Georges in Great Hampton Row/Upper Tower Street Newtown, same as links 1 & 3 above. Good news is they have 3 photos of church but you have to sign up (looks free) to view them.

So a quick recap: There doesn't appear to have been a St George in Wheeler Street, but 2 very close. If your source for Wheeler Street is good then I don't think it's any of what I've found above. However if source is poor then I would check photos against etching to see if that's same church & maybe contact link 3 for address. Let us know how you get on. Regards, TonyR.

HI Tony,

Thank you very much for the help.

I think my source is pretty reliable, she is a cousin I visited in B'ham a month ago and she said my gr gr grandmother used to clean the pews at the church and she would go and help "granny". My gr gr grandmother died in 1937 and this cousin was born 1921, so it would be between those years.

Maybe, it wasn't "on" Wheeler, but that was the closest street Undecided
