The black sheep: Florence Stevenson née Hampson

The Ettridges must have died, but when?
« on: Thursday 08 May 08 13:08 BST (UK) »

I've been looking for the death of my great x3 grandparents William Ettridge and Sarah Ann Ettridge, née Bissell, but so far without any success.  I would appreciate extra pairs of eyes, if anyone can spare the time.

Sarah Ann Bissell, born 21 Dec 1825 in St Luke's, Finsbury, Middx.
I have her on the 1841, 1851, 1861 and 1871 censuses.
Married William Ettridge (born 5 Aug 1824, also St Luke's) 4 Jul 1847 at St John the Baptist, Hoxton, witnessed by Thomas Ettridge & Caroline Ettridge

Their children: William (c. 1848 St Luke's), Alfred (c. 1850 St Luke's), Emma (c. 1854 St Lukes), Arthur (1854 Bethnal Green), Elizabeth (c. 1857 St Lukes), Maria (c. 1858 Haggerstone), Rebecca (c. 1862 Bethnal Green), Caroline (c. 1864 Bethnal Green), John (c. 1867 Bethnal Green)

On the 1861 (RG9/251, f. 15 p. 39) and 1871 (RG10/475, f. 49 p. 26) censuses, they're in Bethnal Green, and husband William is in Bethnal Green on the 1881 (RG11/427, f. 52, p. 17) and 1891 (RG12/262, f. 70, p. 26)censuses.  William is a widower on the 1891 census, but still shown as married on the 1881 census, though Sarah Ann isn't with them: either she has already died by 1881 or is hiding from me.  William seems to disappear after the 1891 census.

Ooo ...

Thanks for spotting those census records, Jennifer.

The first (definitely him, mistranscribed on Ancestry as Ethridge) pushes his death back ten years later than first thought.

I've had a quick look for his death.  Freebmd is making great progress with 20th century bmds, but, unless he's hiding, they don't seem to have got to the page with him on yet!

Checked  up to 1920 but no sign of him.

Then thought he perhaps lived to a goodly age and started checking from 1921 and found him:

William Ettridge    98     Bethnal G.     Sept.1922   1c 134.

Cor blimey.  98!

Thanks very much for that, Annette.

I really have to send for that death certificate now.  I think he's the longest living I've come across in my family tree so far!

Thanks for that dwaestev - I have quite a few Ettridges in common with the owner of that website.  I need to get in touch with them to see what further detail they have beyond the bare bones that are there.
