HODGE in Holsworthy Devon
« on: Thursday 08 May 08 14:39 BST (UK) »

Hi All

Is anyone researching the name of Hodge in North Devon?

I'm not having much luck finding any links to this family so would welcome any help.

Grt grt grandmother in law was Sally/Sarah Hodge born about 1813 daughter of William and Mary (Burnard) Hodge.  I've managed to find the marriage of William and Mary in 1807 Holsworthy but that's it.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

ummm here is an IGI ectracted Christening

Ann Braund d/o Christopher and ANN

Christopher Braund = Ann PYPER
13 OCT 1820   Holsworthy

Christopher Braund was christened  28 MAR 1802 Holsworthy
s/o William and Hannah
ummm but this does not fit with his age in 1841.

1851 a Christopher Braund, b 1801 is living with his married sister-in-law Elizabeth LocK. I Cannot find a Christopher Braund b c 1811. Undecided

in 1851;Jane Braund b c 1837, is a house servant for a farmer Palmer and family , living in Milton Damerel. Eliza b 1835 is also a servant for a Farmer Sandercock living in Hollacombe. Can't see Christopher b c 1840.

hi again

I hope I am on the right track

It seems that Christopher Braund married his sister-in-law

Christopher Braund = Elizabeth Lock
Mar q 1858 Holsworthy.

They are together as husband and wife in 1861.

Hi Deb usa

Thank you for your replies to my message.

Sally was indeed married to Christopher Braund, I have their marriage certificate and I have Christopher's tree back to 1465 thanks to the Braund Society.

I want to start researching Sally's parents William and Mary (Burnard) Hodge and their families but can't seem to find the link.  Thank you for Sally's possible siblings, I will look into those and maybe I will find a link that way, but as I said, no luck so far.

Thanks again

Hi Timetraveller

I think this may be william Hodge's parents;

In 1851 he is living in Holsworthy, age 66 and says he was born Pancrasweek! (registration district is Holsworthy!)

extracted IGI;

William Hodge
9 Jan 1785 Pancrasweek
parents; John and Ann

will look for more

Hi again

Possible siblings of William Hodge b c 1785

They are all christened in Pancrasweek to parents ; John and Anne, all extracted IGI entries;

John Hodge 17 Nov 1782
Ann Hodge 11 Apr 1787
Honour Hodge 19 april 1789  Undecided
Honour Hodge 19 april 1791  Undecided
Marey Hodge 2 Oct 1791
Richard Hodge 18 feb 1795
Jane Hodge 30 Mar 1798

I am not sure what is going on the the 2 Honours ... they are both extracted entries and on same day , different year. maybe a mistranscription. I can't find a death for an Honour either.  Marey Hodge is chr. in 1791 so I would tend to think that Honour was chr/born 1789.

The only marriage I can find between a John Hodge and an Ann/e is this one...but I am not sure of the area.

John Hodge = Ann Williams
29 sept 1778
Newton Ferrers.

christening from IGI extracted

ANNE BORNARD
30 Nov 1783 , Pancrasweek
parents; James and Sousanah

it seems that Anne b c 1783 is their only child.

Hi

On National Archives there is this ;

a will: ref 1078/IRW/H/1087  held at DRO
Document relating to Richard Hodge of Pancrasweek
dated 1834

also a document refering to the tenure of John Hodge the elder at Pancrasweek dated 1760
held at DRO. ref: Z16/1/23/5

The will is exciting as you may find out a lot more of the Hodge family. Richard Hodge was the brother of your William Hodge who married Mary Burnard.

Hi Deb

Thank you for all this new info for me.  I would have replied last nite but in my excitement trying to print it all off my printer died on me!  So I have to wait now for my new one to get here - oh well, patience is a virtue!  You don't realise how much you rely on a printer till it isn't there.  I'm rambling, famous for that!

Yes, borders in Devon and Cornwall keep shifting and was confusing for me when I first started research in that area.  I was in Pancrassweek last year, a very pretty place.

Thanks again.  I don't know why I couldn't find the right info when I kept looking.

Best wishes
