Catholic Burial Records Sunderland
« on: Thursday 08 May 08 16:17 BST (UK) »

Hello there!

I have consistently failed to find the burial of one ancestor in Sunderland between 1812 and 1841.

His name was George Miller, and I have recently found what might be his baptism in a Catholic chapel in Yorkshire, so I am wondering if he might have been buried as a Catholic as well (even though his whole family was brouight up as Anglican).

Could someone tell me which Catholic churches existed in Sunderland and Bishopwearmouth at that time? Do the records still exist?

Many thanks

Ashley

The Catholic's first chapel in Sunderland was in Warren Street, in the east end, but this was burnt by a mob in 1746. They then had another at the south end of Vine Street, before moving to one in Dunning Street in 1785. St. Mary’s, 27 Bridge Street, was built in 1835, and opened on 15th. September. It is now a listed building.
