Given or Govan
« on: Thursday 08 May 08 17:14 BST (UK) »

where else can I look
I am not sure if I linked these properly
A while ago I posted to see if anyone could help me find a death for Solomon Given
in Scotland some very kind people tried but we did not find it
however I think I may have been looking in the wrong place
I have just found this
1881 census for Barrow in Furnace
Solomon Govan .........1824.......Ireland.......Engine driver on dredger
Agnes Govan..............1825.......Ireland.......wife
Mary Govan................1863.......Scotland.....daughter
on a different page there is a John Govan and family
they have a son called Solomon too
I have never search English records for death certs could someone tell me how to go
about it
I am almost sure this is the same family as the births are all the same year as my Given family
and Solomon Given in my tree was a steamboat fireman
and I have other information that the family were sometimes Known as Govan
thanks
Elaine

I have never search English records for death certs could someone tell me how to go

Usually start with Free BMDs  http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

Then there are the local bmd sites; Lancashire's is  http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/   - but don't go there for this search as they don't cover Barrow. You might be best to contact Barrow-in-Furness record office first http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/archives/recordoffices/barec.asp  (Barrow was in Lancashire, but records  now in Cumbria county)

I had a look on Free BMDs and found what might be the other family's Solomon Govan - died in Hampshire! born c.1874, died 1918 age 45. But not your older Solomon  Huh

Any idea of when he died, just to narrow it down? Would it be before the 1891 census do you think?

Re searching English bmds - I find www.freebmd.org.uk easier to use than Ancestry.

It didn't find a Solomon Govan death in Barrow in Furness, but has found one in Petersfield (Hampshire area?)

Solomon Govan, age 45, District: Petersfield, vol: 2c, page: 479

You can use those details to order a copy of the certificate from http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates

This Solomon is obviously not your 1824 one.

Thanks Barbara and Aulus
I think that one may be the grandson of Solomon
I haven't been able to find them anywhere after the 1881 census
I dont know if they died there or maybe moved elsewhere
they are definately not in Scotland  on the first thread I done on them it was suggested that they
may have went to Ireland
looks as though they might have
thank you for taking time to look

I think I have found Agnes's death in Barrow in Furness
would an English death cert give the names of her parents (if known)

Sadly not. Unless ther parent was the informant of course. English death certs are nothing like as informative as the Scottish ones, you often don't even get a married woman's maiden name.

http://home.clara.net/dixons/Certificates/deaths.htm#INTRO

this is a good site I found that tells you what you can expect to find on English certificates

Well done for finding the death anyway  Cheesy

Thanks Barbara
It was a stroke of Luck finding the death as I was looking for someone else's
death at the time Cheesy
I dont think her parents would have been the informant on the cert
probably either Solomon her husband or a son or daughter
I have their marriage banns but that only gives bride and groom details
so maybe if I find which church they married in that may have them
thankyou
