Charles Scarlett - 1841 census look up Gosport/Portsea/Alverstoke.
« on: Thursday 08 May 08 18:12 BST (UK) »

In the 1881 census there are two Charles Scarlett's a couple of years apart born about 1831 and 1833 residing in Portsmouth.  Both appear to have been seaman and one of them was the child of James and Elizabeth. I'd like to see where both of them appear in the 1841 census in the hope of finding out a bit more of their respective backgrounds.

Regards,
Phil.

Thanks Wozzle.  I'm interested to see that James was born 'out of county ' as I had hopefully presumed he was the son of Joseph and Mary Scarlett, who married in the area in 1800, and the brother of Thomas. There remains the mystery of the other Charles who appears in the 1881 census aged 50 with birthplace Gosport. Could you be so kind as to check the 1851 census for me?

Thanks,
Phil

Charles John Scarlett son of James & Elizabeth Scarlett baptised 10 Mar 1833 Alverstoke.

Joseph and Mary (nee Ingram) who married in 1800 did have sons named James (born 1801 baptised 1803) and Thomas (baptised 1805).

I've no idea about the other Charles Scarlet(t) at the moment.

Thank you Wozzle and Nell.  The mystery remains concerning the 1881 census entries. I guess it's possible that one Charles had two entries in the 1881 census, being on the books of the residence for retired mariners but actually living elsewhere. However there is still a two year age discrepancy to contend with.
Thank you Nell for confirming that Thomas was  Joseph and Mary's son - they are my direct ancestors.
Would you know who Charles John Scarlett married in 1853 in Portsea? I've narrowed it down to either Mary Ann Earwicker or Catherine Courtney. I know that he later married Louisa Sarah Preston in 1875 .

That seems pretty conclusive!  I'd vote for Mary Ann.  But to be sure you would need marriage certificate.

Thank you very much Wozzle and Nell.
Odd that Mary should be listed as 'head' and 'mar' at the same time! And was she born when her mum was 14?
I've realised that HMS Asia wasn't a retirement home! It was a second rate Ganges class wooden 84gun sail ship which had been launched in 1824. By 1881 it was 'Guard of the reserve' at Portsmouth. Many of the crew in the 1881 census have 'Pensr' after the description of their role (AB, Stoker etc.) which presumably indicated that they would be entitled to a pension on retirement(?).
This suggests to me that (a) Charles was double counted in the 1881 census and (b) like many he overestimated his age on joining.

Thank you for your help.
