Thanks Newfster.  Glad there's no problems.  I'd better get on and do it then!  Cheers.

I've been informed that there were problems with it:-

http://www.pcplus.co.uk/news/home_news/windows_xp_sp3_delayed_again

Basically, if you had XP SP2 installed and have your automatic updates turned on then you have been downloading SP3 for a long time.  Anything issued since SP2 has been an SP3 update.  You are only missing a couple of updates that make up the full SP3 package.

Hi Downside,

I have SP2 and this morning it was busy downloading SP3 so I suppose it has done it on it's own.  I normally choose my updates, but got no choice for this which I thought was very odd!

But so far so good and fingers crossed!

Well, I must be the exception that proves the rule. I don't use Automatic Updates, but have the facility that notifies me when updates are available. I'd seen that SP3 was coming so when the update icon told me it was there I created a new system restore point & then downloaded. It seems to be the longest one I've ever done - about an hour in the end (I am on "upto 8Mbs" - usually around 5-6 MBs) - there were several features on the download that looked very different to the usual MS downloads. I rebooted & that's when the problems started -  a persistent pop-up about Media Center Receiver - about every 30 seconds. I tried the event viewer link through which told me MS doesn't have a solution yet! So it was "system restore" back to before SP3 & no pop-ups.
I'll wait until there are more updates before trying again.

I downloaded SP3 a couple of days ago through automatic updates . . . after which, I discovered that it had only downloaded the new version of the update manager, to enable me to download the upgrade!

However, I then carried on with downloading SP3 itself. Not sure how long it took 'cos I went to the shops while I was waiting, and when I came back it was waiting for me to re-start Windows. It then took a considerable time to install, but happily re-started without further problems. The PC definitely seems to start up a little faster now, having become rather sluggish lately.

One or two programs had to re-install themselves on first use after the upgrade, but otherwise, no problems . . . yet  Roll Eyes

If you want to find out if you have SP3 installed,  click Start/My Computer/Help/About Windows.

Hi mshrmh,

I don't use automatic update either!  Thats what I was saying, I got a message to say that Updates were ready and went to look at what it was but it had already started on it's own!  Why I know not!

My Norton went potty for a while, making me OK this and that and then all was well.

But as Downside said I did already have SP2 installed.  I did it via the disks which can be obtained from MS.  If you ring them they will send them to you!

Hi Rabbit B - I'd done all the updates prior to SP3, so I'm not too worried about delaying that, especially as I normally use Firefox rather than Internet Explorer. What really did annoy me was that when I restarted I got a full screen message urging me to go to Automatic Updates & warning of the dangers of not doing so - that was before the desktop loaded (and the annoying popups) - I do get cheesed off with MS bossing me about - especially as SP3 created a problem that didn't exist before on this PC. I've had problems with Windows Media stuff before, so I'm not too surprised that there was another.

Hi mshrmh

I did not have a problem really at all, it was just so odd that as I have it set on the non auto updates, that it did it on it's own!

MS are OK if you deal with the English offices, in fact they can be very helpful.

Why not have a gentle complain and see what happens, or better still phone and talk to a Manager  You just don't know what will happen if you do!  Give it a whirl and be ever so polite, it never does to know too much with these people!  Most of them are just Kids and very nice indeed!
