Roadside, Whitechapel in 1825 - where was it?
« on: Thursday 08 May 08 19:33 BST (UK) »

Can anyone locate Roadside, Whitechapel in 1825?

I have it as the address of a family christened at St Mary Whitechapel in 1823 & 1825.  I have the parish outline and have looked at the Booth Poverty Maps and an 1813 map I have. In the Victorian Streets list it just says see Whitechapel Road.

It is a real address because Gooogling reveals some others have it as their addresses on family history sites.

I would be grateful for any help.

Hello Hepburn

Thanks - I found  those, but wondered where Roadside actually was.  I have looked on the other online 19th century maps; squinted a lot, but cannot see it.

Does anyone have the Early Victorian Street Atlas?  I suppose if there was any info dated to after 1841 I could try to look on the census.

If you have any more ideas, please let me know.

In Stanford's 1862 map it's above the L in Mile End Road opposite Hayfield Place; Bankside being to the right.

JustinL you are a real STAR!

Thank you.  I thought I had looked at all the London map sites.  Very cool indeed.

Next thing is how can I print a segement just showing the screen with this on? I know there are add-ons to do this, but have forgotten where they are.

I do like to be able to locate THEN and NOW (uu on Google Earth) and my ultimate aim is to be able to geocode such places to current maps and add them as Google layers.  But I am not clever enough.

Anyway, many thanks!

I was still a bit sceptical about the location I found for Roadside so I wrote to the Tower Hamlets Local History Library and Archives this morning and received the very prompt reply.

"Roadside", Whitechapel, was another way of referring to some parts of Whitechapel Road in the 18th and 19th centuries, persisting at least as late as the 1870s, though no date has been traced for any official abolition of the name. There is no map in the collection using the term "Roadside" for Whitechapel Road but on the Weekly Dispatch map of 1862 part of Mile End Road, the eastern continuation of Whitechapel Road, is designated in the same way(north side, east of St. Peters Road).

For the section running eastwards from North Streeet(later Brady Street) junction no's 154-158 Roadside, in the 1851 census, that section is listed as 154-160 Whitechapel Road in the 1861 census.

I have also noticed that the south side of Whitechapel Road running approximately from Cannon Place and the London Hospital was also listed in the 1851 census as Roadside, Whitechapel.

You can draw your own conslusions. I suspect your ancestors lived closer to the Royal London Hospital in the parish of Whitechapel.

Justin, that is above and beyond!

These are my elusive London QUESTEDs.  This family later lived in Gloucester St (now Settle Street), off Fieldgate Street,  and Dunk Street (no longer exists but another kind family/local historian has located it on Google Earth) just to the north side of the Whitechapel Road, up from Gloucester Street.  I can see both on this map.

I have scattered London QUESTEDS from 16th century onwards.  A family were living in the Tower, and the map shows how close this was.  One aim is to see whether my lot link to the Tower family.

I like locating them on the old maps; every little helps.

Again, many thanks.
