Sweden to London, 1946.
« on: Thursday 08 May 08 20:44 BST (UK) »

My grandad came from Sweden to London in 1946, he was extremely secretive about his past and had 2 different names - would papers be available to view?  He returned to Sweden before 1956 when his mother died, burnt his birth cert, and came back over to England before 1956.

 - according to this, you'll need to work out where in Sweden he came from (I think especially if you are looking for more recent records, which are not very likely to be online).

One possible source is if he became a British citizen. You could try looking for him on the NA site, or at http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/AdvancedSearch.aspx?geotype=London

Just curious, did he use two completely different names?  My Swedish grandfather's name was Manne August Jönsson, but when living in England he was known as Jack Johnson, probably as it was easier for workmates and employers etc to pronounce.

Yes, he was born Valdis Valdeman Krilovs according to his marriage cert, his father died and his mum remarried. His stepfather made him change his surname to Swensson, and his forenames to the Swedish spelling of Waldis Waldeman. (The original spellings were Latvian). In England he was Walter Krilovs.  He wanted to change the spelling to Crylovs but an admin error meant it didnt happen!
