Hello,
Could someone have a look for me please for the birth information for Edward Richard George Heath, born 9th July 1916, in Broadstairs. The birth was registered in Thanet. I know his father was a carpenter turned master builder and his mother was a lady's maid (maiden name Panteney). I am researching the Heath line, so would appreciate any information that can also be found on his father and his family in particular, but would be grateful for anything of interest.

Hi mrsd,
Isn't that the Mr Heath, ex Prime Minister?
You seem to have most of the info that you would find on his birth certificate.
This is the nearest match I can find for his parents'marriage: (FreeBMD)
William G Heath Jun 1913 Thanet 2a 1903
Bride: Edith Pantony

Thanks nanny jan and eyesee. Yes it is the ex Prime Minister. I had always heard this story from my nan when I was young, but I think that most people dismissed it as another one of these myths and legends that get passed around the family. I recently found out that it is true, and that a cousin has already established the link; unfortunately, she has chosen not to share this information, hence me having to find it for myself. As I don't know which branch of the family he is decended from, I thought it might be easier to start with him and work backwards. Having been told that there are 2 potential fathers born within a couple of years of each other in a similar area, has already thrown a spanner in the works though. I'm hoping to read his autobiography soon, to see if that gives me any more information, as everything I've found so far has been through Google.

An obituary ............... at his home on Oct 15th (1976) at Broadstairs, William George HEATH age 88 years beloved husband of Mary and father of Edward and John. Service at St Peter's church, Broadstairs on Wed 20 Oct at 12 noon followed by private cremation. Family flowers only. Donations can be sent to Dr D A Lillicrap's? Ramsgate Leukaemia Fund, Ramsgate Hospital, Kent. Enquiries to H NOBLE Thanet 62503.
He died five days after celebrating his 88th birthday.
Snippets from a full obituary in "The Times" 18 Oct 1876 ........................ though the family originated in Devon, most of the HEATHs in Ramsgate and Broadstairs since the beginning of the last century and William was born there. His father in the dairy business but then he lost all his money (William's father) and went on the railway as a luggage porter. Edward born in 1916 and his parents married 3 years before that - Edith having been a ladies maid prior to her marriage. Edith died in 1951 having had two sons, Edward and John. Following Edith's death, William remarried and he remarried for a third time (to Mary) when his second wife died.

Hmm. I'm starting to get a bit suspicious of my cousin's claims after reading this (thanks caselguidi). My Heaths originated from Staffordshire, although I have descended from a couple of breakaway Monmouthshire branches. I have been looking back in the censuses for Stephen (William's father) and found that for both 1861 and 1871, he is showing as living with his mother, Elizabeth, who is classed as a wife, but no mention of a father. (Was there a war going on at that time?) I've tried a "quick and dirty" marriage match for Thanet in freebmd without any success. I do know that Elizabeth was also born in Kent.
Anyone any ideas or should I just abandon this do you think, unless I can get hold of anything more substantive (or my cousin's neck!)
Thanks anyway.

This looks to be Stephen's parents (I suspect George was at sea in other years) ............ does it help?
1891
George Weymouth HEATH head mar 61 boatman at Ramsgate Pierhead b.St Mary's Church, Devonshire Elizabeth Arnold wife 54 b.Sandwich Kent
RG12/731 folio 50 page 1
Elizabeth A(rnold) NEWING married George HEATH 1860 http://extranet3.kent.gov.uk/sp/rois/marriagesearch.cfm
It would appear that there was an article published in the journal of Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies 1966 which shows Edward HEATH's immediate ancestry and which takes it back another generation from George Weymouth HEATH http://www.guiseley94.freeserve.co.uk/PMs/heath.htm (I'm sure that this would be correct as researched by accomplished genealogists)

Thanks again everyone.
I have just posted on the Devon site, to see if anyone there can help with the latest link.
I've also contacted the museum at Margate to see if they can assist and will try to obtain a copy of this article on his ancestry.
Caselguidi, being at sea would explain not being on a census more than once when there is a family in existence.
I'll let you all know if any Devonians are able to help any further.
