Marriage Record pre 1837
« on: Thursday 28 August 08 15:06 BST (UK) »

Hi
I have a couple of ancestors who were married in St Mary Le Bow Church in Durham in 1808.  I found the record in the Pallots Marriage index.

I think the St Mary Le Bow Church in Durham is just to the side of the Cathedral and is now a Heritage Museum.

It says that they were "of the college".  Does anyone know what this means?

I don't think the university existed as such in 1808.

Any help would be appreciated - thank you

The College is the name given in Durham to the Cathedral Close, which is an
extra-parochial area

Thanks Stan

Can you tell me exactly what the Cathedral Close is - is it just an area of Durham or a street name.

Thanks

Hi Andrea,
It is on the south side of the Cathedral and is the home of the Cathedral clergy and others associated with its life.

That is really interesting, Stan

Do you know if it would it just be the county records office where I would go to find out some more information about these 2 particular ancestors, or is there anywhere on line that I could look for more info.

Hi Andrea,
Go to http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm and do a post code search on DH13EQ which will centre the map on 'The College'

Hi Andrea,
You could try the Bishop's Transcripts at http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=0

Click on Europe and you will see the Bishops' Transcripts listed.

Stan

I checked the Bishop's Transcripts (never seen them before) and found out some information, not only about the two people I was looking for but also for quite a few other people too.  I'm really pleased.
Thanks very much for your help!!! Smiley
