Hello,
I am looking for some help in trying to trace my Hoey relatives from somewhere in Ireland.
James Hoey emigrated to England in the early 1870's. His father was also James Hoey but was deceased by the time the son married in England in 1875. I have tried all the usual routes to find where in Ireland they came from. Grave stones in England/Obituaries, but with no success. My family remember the name Drogheda from somewhere, but I have checked with the Louth and Meath libraries who have no parish birth records for James Hoey born approx 1848-1856 son of James Hoey. The fathers occupation was a shoemaker.
Any help would be appreciated

Irish Ancestors Surname Search contains details of the Hoey surname in Ireland at the time of Griffith's Valuation 1848-64. The greatest number of families with the name Hoey were located in Co. Louth. www.ireland.com/ancestor/surname

Hi Christopher,
Thanks for your post. I have seen the Griffith's Valuation with approx 60 references to the name James Hoey. I have looked at the original records on the Origins website to try and see if any of the names could possibly be my relative, but nothing was obvious.
I have tried Pigotts and Slaters trade directories but no James Hoey Shoemakers were apparent.
As you can see my brick wall has brought me to a halt so I thought I would try RootsChat to see if any one else could help.

Hi,
I noticed you said there are about 60 different James Hoey's but I was interested if anyone knew of a James Urban Hoey. I am the 5th generation of James Urban Hoey and was interested to see who my great great grandfather was.

Hello James,
Griffith's Valuation is available on both John Hayes failteromhat.com site and this one www.myirishancestry.com A county, parish and townland make it easier to trace Irish ancestors. If you don't know at least one of those a seach can consume quite a large amount of time and be somewhat costly if you're employing a professional researcher.

Hoeys are coming out of the woodwork!
R, I've just sent you a pm, with a couple of ideas, though I hadn't seem this post at the time, and you may already have covered what I've said,
I know R has seen at least some of my posts on they Hoeys. James, there are some on Louth and some on Dublin and also Lancashire, England.
I'll pm or email a couple of people who've been in touch as a result and poi nt them to this post.
Also, Christopher, hi again! One of Christopher's posts gave me a much clearer view of the picture in saddlery, bootmakking etc which many Hoeys were in. It may be worth looking in Dubkin as wewll as Louth.
Apparently with some hude developments in the leather trade there, there was a huge influx from the country, especially the likes of Louth of people in the leather trade, in the late 19C?
Some of them went toEngland and other places from Dublin even though they were from Louth families. This explained why I was finding possible connections in Dublin, even though other family had emigraated with the potato famine.
I'll look for any I've found that might be relevent.

I haven't actually seen a James Urban, but I don't usually find things quickly with my Hoeys!
If you have any more information = dates, places, occupations, names of siblings etc, that you don't mind sharing, I may have something that links in with more information. Or someone reading this might.
Alternatively, you can send a direct personal message using the buttons to the left of a message left by a Rootschatter, but they won't be given your email address.
It means you don't have to have everything accessible to the whole net. Though you may get more help if you can let more people see it. (Not living peoples' names though as normal).
Anyway, you've made history.

My grandfather, born in Philadelphia, was the son of a James Urban Hoey born in Ireland. My grandfather also had a brother named James Urban Hoey. He and his mother, a widow,
came to the United States when he was 13 months old which would have been about July of 1861.
I do not know where in Ireland my great grandfather was born. I thought my Grandmother once said County Down - but who knows if that is correct.
MARRIAGE OF JAMES U. HOEY AND MARGARET E. MACASSEN
(parents of Louis Stanton Hoey, my grandfather and siblings, Fred, Daisy, Jesse, Urban and Genevieve. The male children were called by their middle name. My grandfather was called Stanton. James Urban was called Urban.)
Marriage license is dated March 28, 1888. Marriage
date is April 4, 1888.
James U. Hoey was born in Ireland on June 2, 1860.
Margaret E. Macassen was born in Philadelphia on
February 2, 1865.

Welcome to Rootschat!
What an appropriate place to start, with the Hoeys! That's a really difficult place to start, most of my info has come from hints after they came to England, or even went to the states! But you have only those few months.
Have you tried the various passenger lists, because some of the ships mannifests gove and address in the country the passenger lefet, and also destinatioon address and the relationship to the person living there.
My Hoeys look like coming from Louth or somewhere in that direction, via Dublin, though there is a family link with Belfast. Haven't gone into that aprt from one census yet, not Hoeys but I bet they're dewscended from them!
I haven't met yours, but I'll see what I can find.

Hi Emms, thank you for the warm welcome! I am in Pennsylvania and my mother was a Hoey. About 20 years ago my grandmother turned 100 and a local Cardinal came to visit in honor of hre 100 years. Her married name, of course, was Hoey. The Cardinal had worked in New York many years before coming to Pennsylvania. He told her the day of the visit that he knew the name Hoey well from New York but it was uncommon in these parts. I knew of my cousins with the name but that is it.
Interestingly - looking in my local phone book this past year I saw the name Hoey and turns out a Hoey family lives nearby! It is an unusual name and this was the first time I met anyone with the name outside of my family. He is not related to my immediate branch - as we talked I found that he did not know where his family in Ireland was from either.
It is possible that this neighbor may be related to my grandfather's brothers children but from our conversation at that time it did not appear to be so. My grandfather died in 1962, I know my grandmother kept in touch with some of the sisters - and there may have been another sister named Martina - but that was a long time ago, and they were already elderly, and I do not know any members of that extended family.
I have not looked into passenger lists for Hoey - my ancestry research is a slow process at this time.
My younger sister has had a lifeling interest in horses which she has shared with her children. Learning the name "Hoey" means "horseman" and that the work of many of the Hoey's was saddlery was VERY interesting.

It's great to hear back from you. Fancy you still having a family interest in horses. I'nm gradually amassing stuff on Hoeys involved and seeing little links. You've probably seen what's online.
When I have something that makes more sense I'll let you know.
Certainly my own family moved with the saddleras to Salford, and the other branches who had been involved in the saddlers in Heywood went to Australia and started out there, quite a large concern until the sixties.
I also know that there were Hoey's in New York who were leather workers, but I haven't joined the puzzle yet! I imagine you've looked at all your censuses.
I'd love to know anything else yoou think of. I'll have a look through my stuff, too..

Hi James Urban Hoey I born 1860 in Ireland came to Philadelphia and married a relative of mine. His mother was widowed and came to US with her son James Urban while he was a very young boy so I don't know father's name. He married a Margaret Elizabeth McCassin in 1888 in Philadelphia...Kathy
