Help - Not sure where to go now.
« on: Sunday 13 April 08 13:07 BST (UK) »

Hello,

I am trying to find a birth record for a William Smith born c1811 Campton Bedfordshire. He is later recorded on the census as being married to Ann(e) c1812 also Campton. Not sure where to go for his birth or even his marriage records.

Can anybody help.

Regards

The IGI has one submitted entry of a marriage to Ann Heathfield  10 Oct 1834 at Campton.  You will need to check this in the parish register.

There is one further marriage also in 1834 to Hannah Lockley.

Do the names of the children or grandchildren give any hint what the wife's surname might have been?

Smith is one of the most difficult to find being so common.  Pre registration in 1837 all baptism, marriage were recorded on parish records which some areas are covered by the IGI.

There is this entry on the IGI ... Also extracted.

William Smith ch. 2.6.1811 Campton Bedford

Father William Smith Mother Mary.

Hello

William SMITH [aged 10 in 1821] born, in & resident of, Campton, was in Bedford Gaol - aged just 10 for arson Shocked

He set fire to the home of James HUMBUSTON - who was he?

Please see the Bedford Gaol online - where you can get his description etc., It says he was "a bad boy" which seems remarkably harsh for even those days?!?

I dont think this case ever went to Assizes [Huh]  as he only got 14 days in prison...paid 9d a week?

Do have a look anyone who can throw light on this as it seems rather strange to me

Tonya

Hope you have progressed with your research - William set fire to home of the HUMBERSTON/E/S... they  appear a wealthy local family.

If you contact the Beds Archives or/and consult their online search engine I hope you find a clue to what is behind this - although I suspect it may be lost and James was rich enough to bury 'stuff'  Lips Sealed
