If someone may have access to the Canterbury Kent parish records, I was hoping you may have time to look for Emma Barker's birth or christianing. She changes her age on the census but it seems she was born cira 1815 and 1818. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
I've got the Baptisms Index for Canterbury, from 1752, but there's nothing for an Emma Barker Do you know anything else about her, such as if she married, when & where?
Thanks for replying. Emma is a mystery as she kept changing her age in census records. In 1841 she said she was born Ireland. In other census she said Canterbury Kent. She died after the 1861 census in the Brighton Workhouse. She married William Gunn in Brighton Sussex 24 April 1837 by Banns. Both apparantly from St Nicholas parish
Nothing surprises me with places of birth on the censuses! It could be enumerator error, or perhaps, to English ears, her place of birth said in an Irish accent sounded like Canterbury so he assumed Canterbury in Kent. (I found one of my Kent people in Yorkshire with place of birth down as Scotland!)
Perhaps the workhouse records, if they still exist, might provide a clue, although the information would only be as good as whatever Emma told them.
