Can't see the wood for the !!!
|
Hi Berlin Bob The surname interest list is a really useful way to contact fellow researchers.many thanks for it. Is there any way the massive names can be ordered into county? It takes ages trying to find matches as my old eyes find reading the small print a strain looking for SMITHS/JONES /HALL in a particular county is difficult. Oh the joys of having popular family names Trees

Hi Trees,
- click on 'Advanced Search' - select a countý from the drop-down pick-list - click on 'Show Search Results'
you will then get every entry, where this county has been entered.
But . . . .
Not everybody enters a county, as their ancestors moved around a bit
so for a second search, enter the county in the Comments field, as *text* this will find all occurrences of 'text' in the comments field. So try the whole county name, then any 'usual' abbreviations, or the Chapman Code (see County drop-down list), etc
Good luck, Bob
ps. For everybody reading this: If you haven't entered a county, please do so. If your folks came from different counties, add more entries, one for each county. As Trees says, it can be handy to search by county, and the more people enter unique county information, the easier it will be to search

Bob,
Love your SIT feature.
One minor infelicity in editing, I don't know if it's always been this way: If I have an entry with a County already identified and edit it, the text fields are filled in correctly with the existing data, but the County drop-down list is blank. It does not automatically position itself on the county previously entered. So if I don't notice this, and, say, change the Comments and Save, I lose the county info.
Added later: oops, never mind. This is probably because I changed my user name and didn't inform the authorities. I just discovered Add is not working at all for me right now.

Hi Mike,
thanks for the PM, I've now changed your user name in the SIT.
If I have an entry with a County already identified and edit it, the text fields are filled in correctly with the existing data, but the County drop-down list is blank. It does not automatically position itself on the county previously entered. So if I don't notice this, and, say, change the Comments and Save, I lose the county info. And you are right, it is an error, nothing to do with change of user name.
One day, when I have lots of time, I will look into this, but for now I must ask all of you to add the county, again, if you edit your entries.
(and if you hadn't entered the county anyway, then do it now !!)

Hi Carrie Ann,
WARBY is there, as entered by "Carrie Ann" : (ENG/../Warby births outside the UK);
When you say "hasn't been added" did you mean that you couldn't see it on the 'Surname Search'. The main database is updated immediately, when you add or change something, but the alphabetical lists from the 'Surname Search' only get updated once a day, at midnight.

The names shown in your posts are those that you added to your profile.
The SIT is a completely seperate database and is not linked in anyway to your posts. Its only link is to the message system to allow you to contact other users.
