Hi,
Could someone date this photo of my gt.grandfather please?
And if anybody has some spare time, a clean-up would be nice.
Mike.

Hi Mike
I am not clever enough to date your photo scientifically but looking at the man I would guess his age to be late twenties or early thirties.
I expect that the experts will do better from their analysis of the type of the tie, the stiff collar, the absence of button holes on the epaulets and the general style of the man.
Good luck
Gobbo

Thanks Irene, that was quick work. He cleaned up well.
. . . and thanks Gobbo, that's about the age I would have said. He was born in 1848, assuming I have the right man. It'll be interesting to see what the experts have to say.
Mike.

Hi Mike
Hopefully Old Rowley will come along and give you the definitive low-down on this picture, but for now, I'd say this portrait dates to the early 1910s, just going on the necktie, collar and moustache...what sort of photo is this? Is it on a card? What size is it?
Cheers Prue

Thanks Jenny, another nice job . . . he wasn't bad looking, but that jacket has seen some use.
I'm afraid I only have a scan of the photo, Prue, but I think the original was on a plain card. I'm a bit puzzled (doesn't take much ) because his apparent age would suggest somewhere around the 1870s - 80s . . . born 1848.
This was taken from a photo dated 1912, and he looks a lot older to me.

I'm not an expert in men's fashions by any means, and without being able to see the whole of the picture I'm unable to point to a date based on the style and size of the portrait...so I shall say no more!

Wow, Carolyn, you've been busy! I've only just finished thanking you for your restore on my other thread. Thank you very much.
Pru, this is the full scan as given to me on a CD. The original is about 5"x4" and I seem to recall it being mounted on a plain card backing. You can just make out the edges of the actual print in the scan, and the vignette effect. Does this help in dating it?
I seem to be completely useless at judging people's ages. The 1912 photo shows the rugged, lined face of a man aged 63. The portrait appears to show a younger, smoother complexion, which I would have said suggested he was not much older than about 40, but that would place the photo back into the early 1890s at the latest.
Just had a further thought . . . would the studio portrait have been retouched? That might explain the difference.
Thanks for all your comments.
Mike.
