Thank you so much for replying Sandy, how amazing that you have a relative from Tardibigge too.
As I said in my post, I have only just found out that my Croxalls came from Walton-on-Trent. The information I have been given is that Charles Croxall was born there about 1825. His father is suposed to have been a William Croxall born 1794 in Staffordshire married to a Elizabeth Scattergood born 1782 also in Staffs.
After that the family tree I have found seems confused because Williams mother is given as Sarah Croxall married to James Aldrut. No dates but he is supposed to have been born in Derbyshire in 1770.
Sarah's parents are described as Joseph Croxall and Margery Baxter born 1738 Derbyshire and married in 1759.
I have no evidence so far to back up the family tree I have found but I have found William and Elizabeth Croxall in the 1851 census living near Redditch and Charles also in Redditch.
It is, or course early days, I only discovered all this a week ago but it will be months before I can get up to either Staffordshire or Derbyshire to look at any records held up there. So, any help you can give me is more that welcome but please do not go to any trouble on my behalf.
Likewise, if there is any thing I can do in return? I plan to pop up to Redditch soon. I had hoped to go up in May but it may have to be early June and one place I plan to explore is Tardebigge so I'll see if I can find the lock and take some photo's for you.
Very best wishes Helen

Hello Helen
My grandmother was Sarah Jane Croxall born Ipsley (Redditch) 1887
My Croxall ancestors are originally from Walton on Trent. William born about 1821, parents William Croxall and Elizabeth Scattergood. The 3 youngest sons seem to have been born in Walton during the 1820s, but by 1841 they are living in the Redditch/Tardebigge area. William and Elizabeth are on the 1841 and 1851 censuses living in the Redditch area.
William married Sarah Bryan in 1844 Charles married Ann Marie Gladwell in 1845 James married Hannah Humphries in 1850
I believe all the Croxalls in the Redditch area during the 19th Century were descended from William Croxall and Elizabeth Scatterood.
I still have some family living in Redditch and visit there often myself. Tardebigg has a lovely old church on a hill with wonderful views across the countryside, including the canal.
I have quite a lot of information about this family, including some BMD certificates.
Regards Angela

Hello Helen Having seen your posts about the Croxalls on this site I decided to register so that I could contact you and share what I know. I am researching the Croxalls in both Redditch and Walton and have a quite detailed tree back to around 1665 which goes back to Ibstock in Leicestershire. My husband's grandfather was Frank Croxall /Cross born in Redditch. I would really like to share what I know and to find out your family story

Your absolutely right Frank was the fourth child of Maria born before she and John Charles Cross married in 1886. and there were 3 more born after the marriage. We know almost nothing about the family from this time. When Frank was 14 he left home we're told after a family row and although he is Frank Cross on the 1901 census he was not living at home. Some time between then and his marriage in 1911 he reverted to Croxall. The years in between are still a mystery - my sister in law said he was in the army but I have yet to find any evidence to support this and I don't know how he came to be in South Wales.
Do you know anything about the rest of the family from that time - did your grandfather keep the name Cross throughout his life? For Frank I will have to search both Cross and Croxall to solve the puzzle.

Thanks for the information Helen - my sister-inlaw was the one who said Frank ahd left home by 14 and that he was not living with any family. I hadn't as yet checked the 1901 census but I will go and look for it now. My problem is that Frank said very little about his family and what little information we have we know is not necessarily the truth.
I would love a copy of the photo if you could possibly senmd it to me. I have some of Frank and his wife in later life but as yet none when he was a young man but I'm hoping someone else in the immediate family may have some. My husband's cousins are on the hunt for information and photos within the current Croxall family. I know he's not in the photo just the rest of the family, but I would love to see his mother and siblings.
Yvonne
