The Wertheim Family

Turnbull's of Murton/Philadelphia.
« on: Friday 09 May 08 19:35 BST (UK) »

Would love to know if anybody out there could aid me in researching the following family:

The story starts with a man called John Turnbull (nice common name in Tynemouth!). He married a lady Jane Hunter in Tynemouth in 1822. I have no idea where John and Jane came from, so would like help with finding out if possible. I know it is unlikely I can get a definite match.

John and Jane had the following children. I have found these kids from familysearch labs by looking in a Tynemouth register. It is wholly possible therefore, that the family may be conected to other parishes.

Children born of John and Jane that i have found:

-Elizabeth Turnbull, christened June 15 1823, Tynemouth (IGI says Christchurch)

-Margery Isabella Turnbull, christened October 2 1825(" ")

-Eleanor Turnbull, christened July 21 1827, Tynemouth.

-James Turnbull (born/christened about 1830). This is my direct ancestor and would be great if someone has details of his baptisms, cannot find it on the registers. He married Mary Thompson in 1850.

-Richard Turnbull (born 1834 but christened January 25 1837 in Tynemouth).

-William Hunter Turnbull, born 1835, christened same day as Richard above, and died in 1837.

-Jane Hunter Turnbull, christened October 2 1841, in Tynemouth,. Would like to know if Jane survived infancy and who she married.

According to the church registers, the family were living at "Murton, near Philadelphia", and the name Murton and Philadelphia have both come up on the registers a few times at the time of children's christenings..

John Turnbull died between 1841 and 1851, and Jane is a widow living at 26 bedford Street, North Shields in the 1851 census.

If anymore info is required please ask. I recieved the census returns through another thread I posted on the Turnbull's. please get in tocuh if you have any info on the family or find anything that I have missed!! Cheesy

Regards and thanks in advance,

Reaybo.

Hi Reaybo, I dont know whether you know this already or not,  the Murton and Philadelphia are the ones at new york near shiremoor, North Shields, area.
on the 1860 ordnance survey Map it shows that the small track that ran from the Shiremoor end of New York Village down to Murton Village  had a slight right hand bend in it about  400 yards down the track and this was known as Philadelphia,  I have lived in the area all of my life and had only heard of the philadelphia in durham and the one in USA of course.

Thankyou to both Janis and Malcolm for your insights and further information...I sem to have skipped John and James on the registers. Did the baptismal records give any reference to these two lad's birth dates?

I have heard through the grape vine that Philadelphia is an extremely small place, so I am guessing any Turnbull's should be related...somehow.

Cheers again guys Cheesy

No birth dates on my transcription and I think if they were there it would be on there as there are others that have birthdates.  I did not look at the BT's at all for this.

Thankyou Janis, your work is very much appreicated!!

I have made contact with a member of Marjery isabella Turnbull's family. That gave me her marriage details which was useful and the children produced. She married Edward Barrass in 1849.
