Anne Stephenson
« on: Saturday 10 May 08 01:12 BST (UK) »

I thought I would find the answers to my Stephenson puzzle when I ordered the marriage certificate of Mary Ann Stephenson and Archibald Harper Donaldson in 1876...in place of father, the name is Ann Stephenson and she is listed as a single woman in occupation.  I looked at free cen and did find a Ann Stephenson as a servant in 1851 but nothing else.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I would go next to try and discover Ann?

Thank you!!

Hi Clazey,

Please could you give full details of Mary Ann's age, birthplace, occupation, from the marriage cert, what census if any you've already found her in etc?  If you've found Mary Ann with mother Ann in any census, which, and what was Ann's age and birthplace?  Also names of the witnesses may be of help

Mary Ann and Archibald Marriage Certificate:  November 30, 1876.  Both from Southwick.  Ann Stephenson is in father's spot and she is a single woman in the occupation.  Witnesses were Thomas Dixon and George Harper.  (George was Archibald's cousin - )

Donaldsons and Harpers are in the 1861 Census, Camden Street, Southwick.

Archibald and Mary's oldest daughter was Agnes b. 1876. In the 1891 Census, there is a visitor.  An Agnes Perry 24.  And one of the children had the middle name of Perry which led me astray for a while as I hoped it was Mary Ann's maiden name...wrong...still may be sister?  Agnes was 24.   Did not discover the Stephenson until I finally, after 10 years of searching, found their youngest daughter's death certificate in New York City, USA.  (Mary Ann Donaldson Clazey).

Found an Ann Stephenson 19 in the 1851 Census where she is a single house servant in the Lowery Household.  (free cen). No Mary Ann anywhere in FreeCen which seems to fit.

To date, only found one other person tracing this line to a point...one of Archibald and Mary Ann's daughters married a Philiskirk.  And, it was a large family!!

Thank you for any direction you might have...
