Hi eilidh
I haven't been able to find any children for a Charles and Ann(e)/Hannah Cater, nor can I find a marriage.
What information led you to Portsmouth and these parents?
Nell

Hi Little Nell,
Apologies for my late reply, just got up, Sunday morning in Australia
Charles & Mary Cater had ten children, I have been able to find the birth details of nine of them born Colchester, Braintree and Harwich. However to date I have not been able to find their marrage details, or Mary's birth details.
Mary Ann Cater was living with her parents Charles and Mary in Colchester Essex 1841 census with her illegitimate daughter Sarah aged 4years
The following year she marries;
19 Oct 1842 Mary Anne sp father Charles (silk weaver) married George Waites ba (carpenter) f Mark (lock keeper?) bo f age bo St Botolphs wit Phoebe Cater (her sister)
On 1851 I found the following entry which I think is Mary & daughter Sarah. I cannot find husband George.
HO107 1791 Parish St James, Colchester, Essex, Barrack Ground
Mary Waits 36years, silk winder born Hants Portsmouth Sarah Waits 14 years silk winder born Colchester Essex
George dies (unable to find his death using all variations to his name Waits Waites Waite)
Mary's daugher Sarah marries in Colchester in 1855. She states George Waits as father but signs Sarah Cater.
D/P 203/1/20 4 Aug 1855 Sarah Ann min sp f George Waite (carpenter) marries Adam Dawson f age ba (sailor) bo Military Rd f William (oilc… maker) signed Sarah Ann Cater (bride) wit Alfred Cater.
Mother Mary remarries the same year.
18 Nov 1855 Mary Ann Waits f Charles Cater (silk weaver) v Charles Whiten wdr (mariner) f Samuel (carpenter) bo f. age bo Military Rd
Mary dies 1860 ( drat just before 1861 census) so I couldnt check her pob
Sorry long winded I am going around in circles trying to resolve this one.
Thank you for all your time.

Variations to try for George Waite: Watt, Watts, White, Waight - there are endless possibilities.
It seems strange that all the children were born in the Essex area except Mary Ann. I've found the 1851 census entry, but can't find her in 1841 with her parents. What was the reference for that? Does it say she was born in the county? I know this may not be reliable but neither should it be ignored. I did find a Mary Ann Cater aged 26 in Essex but not with Charles and Ann or Sarah.

Hi Little Nell,
Yes I agree it would be strange for just one of the children to be born out of the county, however the 1851 Colchester entry is the only one I can find for her
The reference for 1841 census is H0107/344/5
5/15 Black Boy Lane Charles 62 silk weaver Ex Mary 60 Ex Mary 25 Ex Pheobe 17 Ex James 14 shoemaker Ex Emma 12 Ex Ellen 7 Ex Mary 5 Ex Sarah 4 Ex
I have looked at the image and it does say that Mary (Ann) was born in Essex, however in another instance I have found the 1841 pob to be incorrect.
Would be interested to know the details of the other Mary Ann CATER 26 years you found in 1841 Essex, as I do not think I have accounted for her.
Many thanks I appreciate your help.
bye

Some thoughts for you:
Since the 1841 census does not show relationships, it might be unwise to assume that Mary Cater with Charles and Ann in Essex in 1841 is their daughter. She might be their daughter-in-law. And since ages are rounded down, she might be up to 29 years of age. However, given the marriage certificate Charles and Anne did have a daughter named Mary Ann.
Ellen and Mary are unlikely to be Charles and Ann's children - Ann would have to have been 53 when Ellen was born and 55 when young Mary was born. While it is not unknown for there to be two children given the same name in a family, usually the older one had died. So if Mary aged 25+ was their daughter, who was Mary aged 5?
You do need to eliminate the possibility that Mary aged 25+ was the daughter in law and their daughter Mary Ann was elsewhere. Although, who was Mary married to?
The other Mary Ann Cater can be found at HO107/339/1 fo 9 page 12 in Goldhanger, Essex.
This could all be pie in the sky, but by asking the questions, you may find the answers in what you know already.

Hi Little Nell,
Yes the younger children I have already accounted for, they were grandchildren. However Charles is definitely listed as Mary's father when she marries George Waite in 1842 and her sister Phoebe is witness. When Mary remarries in 1855 Charles once again is listed as father.
Some ancestors just want to be elusive
