Hi
I seem to be stuck and not sure where to look next. I have traced back on my husband's side to 1901 census, and this seems to be the sticking point.
I am trying to find the birth and death records for George Darby.
1901 census details: Millbrook, Cornwall. George Darby est 1865, clay quarry worker. Born Taunton, Somerset.
However i cant find a birth record for George Darby from 1860-1870 born in taunton. Have tried the variant Darbey too and that only brings up 1 in 1869, which i dont believe is him.
Any help or advise is very much appreicated.

Hi moggygems,
Welcome to RootsChat!
It rather looks as though George might have been quite confused about both his age and his birthplace.
Trying to trace them back, this is the best I can do (I could well have the wrong people of course).
1901 Millbrook Cornwall George DARBY Head 36 <1865> Clay Quarryman b Taunton, Somerset Susan DARBY Wife 32 <1867> b Liskeard, Cornwall (and children)
1891 Millbrook Cornwall George DERBEY Head 34 <1857> General Labourer b Somersetshire Marilan Susan A DERBEY Wife 26 <1865.
1881, Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset George Wm DARBEY 11 <1870> b Shepton Beauchamp (with his parents - Charles now listed as b Somerset, North Perrott)
1871, Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset Gorge Wm DARBY 2 <1869> b Shepton Beauchamp (Parents are Charles DARBY, b Hazelbury Dorset & Rebecca b Shepton B)
Birth George William DARBEY, Sep qtr 1869, registered in Chard, Somerset
What do you think?
Good luck,
JAP

Do you have Susan's maiden name, and their marriage?
Might be: George DERBY, Stoke Damerel, Jun qtr 1889, Volume 5b, Page 615. There is a Susan POMEROY on the same page.
In 1881, a Susan A POMEROY, 15, b Liskeard, Cornwall is with her parents in Millbrook. Also there in 1871 age 6.
Possible birth: Susan Ann POMERY, Liskeard, March quarter 1865, Volume 5c, page 80

Hello Moggygems

Do you have his marriage cert,as that will name his father and possibly a couple of useful witnesses?
Or do you know the names of any brothers or sisters, please give us any info you have,it'll all help one of us to pin him down
Regards

Births
Maud Mary Darbey Sept 1891, St Germans 5c/36 George Richard Darbey Sept 1896, St Germans 5c/27 Mabel Darbey June 1898, St Germans 5c/31
One of these would give Susan's maiden name.
Can't as yet find a marriage.

Seems that the marriage JAP found is very likely. It's within the area. You could double check it with one of the birth certs.

Wow thank you all so much.
This has helped so much, Will go and order the birth cert for Maud, as that was my Husband's great great Grandmother. Wasnt sure if that was her birth record as the surname confused me, but after all the information provided by you wonderful people i am very sure its her.
Then i can confirm the maiden name, then get the marriage cert to confirm who his father was. The variants of surname are confusing.
Thanks again, very much appreciated.

Cant sleep so decided to look into it some more.
Sadly George William born 1869, isnt my George. I have tracked him to 1901 Wales Census.
1891 Wales Census > George Darby, abt 1870 born in Shepton Beachan, Somerset 1901 Wales Census > George Darby, abt 1869 born Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset
I think the one JAP posted 1891 and 1901 for Millbrook is my George, so will have to wait to see what the birth cert for the children tell me.
I did find a George Durbe (does look like darby on census)
1861 Census > George Durbe, abt 1855 born Bishopsworth, Somerset. Residence 1861 Bedminster. Cant seem to find him after that.
Think the hardest part is going to sit and wait for the certificates.

Hello again moggygems,
Pity about George William of Shepton Beauchamp
But I guess it's always useful to rule out other possibilities.
You already had the 1901 census details.
I'll just list them again but in full this time as it might save other RootsChatters from searching for the complete entry: 1901 Millbrook Cornwall 6 Trefusis Cottage RG13/2186/17/26 George DARBY Head 36 <1865> Clay Quarryman b Taunton, Somerset Susan do Wife 32 <1869> b Liskeard, Cornwall Maud do Daughter 10 <1891> George Son 4 <1897> Mabel Daughter 3 <1898> Samuel Son 1 <1900> Children all born in Millbrook
And the full details of the possible 1891 1891 Millbrook Cornwall 3 Heanton Place RG12/1806/23/40 George DERBEY (might be DARBEY) Head 34 <1857> General Labourer b Somersetshire Marilan Susan A do Wife 26 <1865> b Cornwall Liskeard
'Marilan' is very clearly written - I wonder if anyone knows where it is? (Magdalen is the nearest I can find.)
I'm very hopeful of the Stoke Damerel marriage - given the Liskeard and Millbrook connexions of Susan POMEROY (however spelled).
Well, while you wait, let's hope someone can find George in earlier censuses ...
