Can anyone advise me as to the best way of confirming the identity of my ancestor, Martin Farnell of Coton-in-the-elms. According to the information I have from family sources, he was born ca. 1750 presumably in Coton-in-the-elms, married Frances Mathews of Edingale, and died ca. 1815. (I was told that he was perhaps a squire, although I'm not sure what exactly this would mean.) Martin and Frances apparently had only one child, a daughter Phoebe, born about 1796 (and who married Thomas Rochford of Hill, Sutton Coldfield, Warwickshire).
I have not found any references to parish records for Coton-in-the-elms for this period. Does anyone know if these records exist and if I would be able to consult them at the Derbyshire records office or if there are any other ways of searching for this information?
Thanks, Alan

Hi Alan,
This link gives some information on the parish and its registers although they all seem a bit late for the period you are interested in:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/DBY/CotonintheElms
I'll have a dig around and see if I can find anything else.

Do you have Phoebe's marriage from IGI - it took place on 16 Dec 1816 in Sutton Coldfield?

Dear Pinetree,
Yes, perhaps I should have mentioned that I have this marriage. However, I have otherwise drawn a complete blank regarding both Phoebe and Martin, which is why I'm wondering what to do next.
Many thanks,
Alan

Dear Pinetree,
Sorry, correction, I mean I have the children of Thomas and Phoebe but nothing about Phoebe and Martin themselves. Phoebe doesn't seem to appear on the 1841 census, for example.

Sorry, Pinetree, I didn't immediately see your post about the church in Coton in the elms. That would effectively explain why I don't see any parish records for Coton in the elms for the period concerned. As you say, it must be Lullington or elsewhere that I need to look. Thanks.

Dear Pinetree,
Thanks for this info which I didn't have. I was just musing over the fact that Edingale, from whence came Frances Mathews, Martin Farnell's wife, seems to have two entries in Genuki, one for Staffordshire and one for Derbyshire, and I was trying to figure out if it was the same place or not! Thanks to your previous pointers, I have been able to track down Frances Mathews' christening on the IGI under batch number C034011 for Edingale. I thought perhaps they might have been married there, but I don't find the entry. However, looking at the map of the region, one has the impression that they might have been married anywhere, in who knows which village, town or even county, as you point out! Like looking for the proverbial needle.

Thanks again, Pinetree, for your help! (Sorry, it looks like the "Completed" indication only applies to look up requests, so I will remove it.)
